Sean Byrne’s excellent film The Devil’s Candy (which you can read more about in the latest issue of STARBURST) will have its UK TV premiere in September on Horror Channel.

It heads up a month of fantastic films including David Chirchirillo’s Bad Match, Chad Archibald’s Bite, the massive hit supernatural horror The Pact, Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers (starring John Landis and Ron Perlman!), the monster croc crawls from Lake Placid, and there’s an all-star cast – including Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, Toby Jones, Elizabeth Olsen, and Robert De Niro in the chilling Red Lights.

Taika Waititi Lined Up For James Gunn’s SUICIDE SQUAD Sequel

As James Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel continues to assemble its cast, now comes word that Taika Waititi may be joining the picture.

Via Deadline, Gunn is eager for the Thor: Ragnarok helmer to join The Suicide Squad – yes, the sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad is titled The Suicide Squad – although it’s not known what role is being lined up for Taika.

Given Waititi’s hectic schedule, it’s expected that it will be a small role or a voiceover gig. Currently, the New Zealander has Jojo Rabbit set for an October release, then will direct Next Goal Wins, and then there’s the small matter of Thor: Love and Thunder.

Production on The Suicide Squad is officially set to commence on September 23rd ahead of an August 6th, 2021 release.

Right now, plot details are scarce on the sequel – although we do know that Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Storm Reid, Steve Agee, Flula Borg and Nathan Fillion are joining a host of returning faces.

It was only yesterday that we reported on New Line’s Mortal Kombat reboot having added three more cast members, and now comes word on a further two names joining the picture.

Courtesy of Variety, the movie has cast The Dark Knight’s Chin Han as Shang Tsung and The Wolverine’s Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion.

The pair join a cast that currently includes The Raid’s Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Thor’s Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, newcomer Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Supergirl’s Mehcad Brooks as Jax, The Meg’s Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Superstore’s Josh Lawson as Kano, an unspecified role for Deadpool 2’s Lewis Tan, and Power Rangers’ Ludi Lin lined up as Liu Kang.

Of course, not just a hugely successful video game series, Mortal Kombat fans have since been, err, treated to two Mortal Kombat movies and the genuinely impressive Mortal Kombat: Legacy webseries.

At this stage, Mortal Kombat is set for a March 5th, 2021 release.

Earlier this year, we heard rumblings that Tommy Doyle may be returning to the Halloween franchise in next year’s Halloween Kills – and now we have confirmation that Tommy will indeed be heading back to Haddonfield once again.

Courtesy of Variety, Tommy will be played by longtime genre favourite Anthony Michael Hall. AMH is likely best known for offerings such as The Breakfast Club, Weird Science and Edward Scissorhands, of course.

As for Tommy, he’s one of the poor youngsters tormented by The Shape back in John Carpenter’s 1978 Halloween. Tommy was being babysat by Laurie Strode on the night he came home.

Brian Andrews played Tommy in that first movie, Danny Ray had a cameo as a teen Tommy in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, and an adult version of Tommy would turned up as a key character in Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers. In Curse, it was a fresh-faced Paul Rudd who played Tommy.

There had been talk that Rudd wanted to reprise the Tommy role in Halloween Kills, but that his schedule was already booked in with Jason Reitman’s new Ghostbusters film.

It’s worth noting that Halloween 6 is now totally non-canon, however, with last year’s Halloween completely ignoring any and every movie bar Carpenter’s ’78 picture.

To be directed once again by David Gordon Green, and from a script put together by Green, Danny McBride and Scott Teems, Halloween Kills is booked in for an October 2020 release. Following that, Halloween Ends is already set for October 2021 – with that movie supposedly set to bring the franchise to an end once and for all.

Nathan Fillion Joins SUICIDE SQUAD Sequel

Who doesn’t love Nathan Fillion, right? And now, the genre favourite has been added to James Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel.

Via Deadline, Fillion has signed on for an undisclosed role in the follow-up – a move which sees the actor re-teaming with Gunn after having appeared in Slither, Super and lending his vocals to Guardians of the Galaxy.

Away from his roles in those Gunn movies, FIllion is also beloved for his turn in the likes of Firefly, Serenity, Castle and can currently been seen in The Rookie.

In addition to this, Brightburn’s Steve Agee has signed on for the Suicide Squad sequel – currently titled The Suicide Squad – in the role of King Shark. That villainous humanoid shark is a massive favourite of many a comic book fan, and Agee himself has previously worked with Gunn as one of the Ravagers in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

At present, The Suicide Squad is booked in for an August 2021 release.

D23 News Round-Up

While we’ve already covered some of the big stories D23, here’s a round-up of the best and the rest from the expo extravaganza.

– Director Ryan Coogler has confirmed that Black Panther 2 will be released on May 6th, 2022. A villain and a title have already been proposed by Coogler, and now it’s just a case of getting the story and script iron out.

– The upcoming WandaVision Disney+ miniseries will see Kat Dennings, Randall Park, and Kathryn Hahn featured alongside Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany’s Vision. Dennings will be reprising her Darcy Lewis role from the first two Thor movies, Park will be back as Ant-Man and the Wasp’s FBI agent Jimmy Woo, while Hahn will be playing a nosy neighbour. WandaVision is currently looking at a spring 2021 premiere.

– The Disney Channel is to house an animated Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur series that features 13-year-old Lunella Lafayette and her dinosaur pal in modern-day New York City. Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland’s Cinema Gypsy Productions are developing the series with Disney.

– Up next in the animated movie stakes for Disney is a picture titled Raya and the Last Dragon. Inspired by the culture of Southeast Asia, Cassie Steele will voice Raya and Awkwafina will be voicing Sisu, the last dragon.

– The Mandalorian – which had its first trailer screened at D23 – has added MingNa-Wen to its cast in a mystery role. Wen is no stranger to the House of Mouse, for she voiced the title character in 1998’s Mulan and has more recently been seen as Agent Melinda May in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for the past six years.

– Sticking with all things ‘a galaxy far, far away’ and the seventh season of The Clone Wars has been confirmed to premiere in February 2020. And yes, the fan favourite animated series will be landing on the impending Disney+ streaming service.

All of these titbits come hot on the heels of Game of Thrones‘ Kit Harington and Captain Marvel‘s Gemma Chan joining The Eternals, Overlord‘s Wyatt Russell joining The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as US Agent, confirmation that Ewan McGregor is returning for a live-action Obi-Wan Kenobi show, and that She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel are all getting their own live-action Disney+ series.

Andrew Koji Lined Up as SNAKE EYES’ Storm Shadow

While Paramount’s Snake Eyes movie is seemingly close to landing its titular ninja – Henry Golding in advanced talks for the gig – now comes an update on who’ll be the villain of the piece.

Courtesy of The Wrap, Warrior’s Andrew Koji is being lined up to play Storm Shadow in the picture. The characters of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow started off as a military buddies before they ultimate ending up choosing opposing sides in the battle between G.I. Joe and Cobra.

The Storm Shadow character has previously been played in live-action by Byung-Hun Lee in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

To be directed by Robert Schwentke, Snake Eyes is currently booked in for an October 2020 release.
