THE TOXIC AVENGER Remake Has Found its Big-Bad in Bacon!

toxic avenger

Spare a thought for poor Melvin Ferd. When Margot Robbie gets pushed into a vat of toxic waste, she emerges as an even more attractive Margot Robbie. When Melvin gets tossed in, he emerges as the abominably ugly Toxic Avenger. At least the rule that ‘vats of strange substances in fantasy stories grant superpowers’ remain consistent; so while Harley Quinn is suddenly an expert gymnast and can wield a mean baseball bat, Toxie has super strength and wields a mean… mop. Close enough. Why are we suddenly ruminating on a 1984 Troma movie, you ask? Because after three decades it’s finally come time to reboot The Toxic Avenger, and this week brings a major update in its casting ahead of the film’s shoot later this June!

Before we get to the project’s latest development, let’s get up to speed: Game of Thrones veteran Peter Dinklage will be inheriting the mop, Room’s Jacob Tremblay is in the mix in an unknown role (possibly Toxie’s son), and Macon Blair is writing and directing for new rights holders Legendary Pictures. Blair is probably best known for his haunting turn in the award-winning 2013 indie Blue Ruin, but he’s also responsible for the fabulous 2017 Netflix Original I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore starring Melanie Lynskey and Elijah Wood, which marked his transition from actor to filmmaker. Happily, Blair’s reboot has the full blessing of original creators Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, who will both be on board as producers.

Now comes news that yet another interesting name has joined the picture in the form of Kevin Bacon himself. The actor is so omnipresent it’s scientifically proven that he can be linked to any other actor in the world in just six degrees of separation (give it a try!), so naturally he needs no introduction here. While the movie’s plot is still shrouded in secrecy, it is believed that Bacon will be playing its principal antagonist.

We’ll undoubtedly hear more on The Toxic Avenger remake as it gears up to shoot in Bulgaria any day now, so stay tuned for updates! In the meantime, for more Troma goodness, why not watch our exclusive interview with STARBURST International Film Festival Hall of Famer Lloyd Kaufman from last year! It’s every bit as bonkers as you might imagine…

LORD OF THE RINGS Spin-Off Will Be Animated

The-War-of-the-Rohirrim

New Line Cinema have announced that a new, feature length animated movie set in Middle Earth is in production. The movie will be put together by Warner Bros Animation.  Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews will be writing the script and it will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama, who also brought us the award-winning anime, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and the critically acclaimed Napping Princess.

The feature will be called The War of the Rohirrim,  and will be set roughly 250 years before events of Lord of The Rings.  It will explore the war-torn history of Helm’s Deep and promises to be a spectacular and bloody feast for fans of fantasy and anime alike. The story will draw upon some of the deeper lore from Tolkien’s writing. Screenwriter Philippa Boyens, who worked on Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies is to be a consultant on the project.

As yet, no voice actors have been cast for any of the roles, but given the high number of American voice actors who are card carrying fantasy fans, it’s likely that this will feature a stellar cast.

SPAWN Spin-Off In Development

Sam and Twitch

Comic book detectives Sam and Twitch are set to have their own TV series, according to Spawn creator Todd McFarlane.  The comic book creator has teamed up with production house Wiip, who are best known for the crime drama, Mare of East Town.

At the time of writing, a Sam and Twitch series seems a perfect fit for Wiip as they  have recently been acquired by South Korean broadcaster JTBC, who have a strong track record for tightly-budgeted, character focused supernatural dramas.

Condor writers  Jason Smilovic and Todd Katzberg are currently attached to the project.

The duo  of NYPD detectives known as Sam & Twitch appeared in the first issue of Spawn and have since branched out into their own stories Detective Sam Burke is a brawny and brutal powerhouse, where as Max ‘Twitch’ Williams is agile and cunning. This classic set-up has become a firm fan favourite over the years. The show seems to planning to fill a gap left by shows such as Supernatural. No casting or production schedule has been announced as yet,  but expect to see something late 2022 on one of the many streaming services.

Todd McFarlane told the press; “My two detective characters Sam Burke and “Twitch” Williams appeared in the very first issue of SPAWN #1 back in 1992. Since then, they’ve become fan favorites and have branched out into their own comic series throughout the years. Their stories, blending traditional crime noir and the supernatural, is a combination that I’ve always thought would make for an entertaining television drama. The addition of wiip and the creative writing skills of Jason Smilovic and Todd Katzberg make for a very compelling team that we all hope leads to the entertaining show we know this can be. If you like cool, moody, creepy, odd crime stories, this will be your cup of tea!”

Bryan Fuller to Reimagine Stephen King’s CHRISTINE

Christine

Classic John Carpenter horror movie Christine is to get the full Hollywood reboot treatment. The project will be written and directed by TV’s Bryan Fuller.  The original 1983 movie is based on the novel of the same name that launched Stephen King’s career to legendary status. It  is the story of a cherry red 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine which becomes possessed by dark supernatural forces.  It’s owner becomes obsessed with the vehicle whilst the body count rises.

Bryan Fuller is better known for his TV work, which includes Hannibal,  Star Trek Voyager, American Gods and Pushing  Daisies. This will be his motion picture directorial debut and Fuller will write and direct for Sony and Blumhouse. The producers include Jason Blum, Vincenzo Natali and Steve Hoban. We understand the new movie will be based on the book rather than the movie, but given that the movie sticks pretty close to the book, that doesn’t really tell us much at this stage.
Despite its supernatural elements, Christine is broadly regarded as a science fiction story .Similar tales include other sci-fi fare such as Theodore Sturgeon’s Killdozer! and Issac Asimov’s “Sally”. This won’t be the first time Fuller has worked on a story about a deadly and malovolent vehicle ; he also wrote the teleplay for the Star Trek Voyager episode Alice which features a similar (but far less bloody) plot.

Our Series THE E.I. OF SCI-FI Has Become a Workshop!

Are you a fan of our The E.I. of Sci-Fi over on our YouTube channel? Then this will most definitely be of interest! Here’s STARBURST writer and The E.I. of Sci-Fi host/creator Rachel Knightley to tell us more…

“This Sunday, 7pm my time and 2pm theirs, I’m doing a workshop on Jewish ethics in science fiction for Limmud North America. This, like Mr Lister’s “ouroboros” birth (if you don’t know, come along and find out), is something of a full circle as the STARBURST series it’s based on is itself based on the Jewish culture and learning that Limmud explores and celebrates.

I’ve often joked I was brought up on two religions: Judaism and Star Trek. But the real joke in there was the idea that science fiction and my own belief system were in any way separate. What appeals to me about both – and the reason I’m here, part of STARBURST, writing this – is awareness of the world not simply as it is but as it could, and should, be.

Most of us know Leonard Nimoy peaked at the priestly blessing as a kid and remembered the gesture in creating the Vulcan salute; Star Trek fans have also explored how Yatzer Hatov (our selfish side) and Yatzer Hatov (our benevolent side) are more use combined than separated (see transporter accidents and parallel universes in the original series’ Mirror Mirror, The Enemy Within). In The E.I. of Sci -Fi on STARBURST’s YouTube channel, I go on from Star Trek to talk about Red Dwarf’s parallel universes and how those different versions of self show the versions of the same man blaming the world or, as Ace Rimmer and my belief system feel we have a duty to, repairing it, making as good as we can (Tikkun Olam: repairing the world).

You don’t have to be Jewish, or even a science fiction fan, and we won’t try to turn you into either (both are non-evangelistic religions. Well, Judaism is. I guess it depends on the individual sci-fi fan!). But it will be a great chat about all things sci-fi – so bring along your own thoughts to share too. It’d be great to see STARBURST faces there!”

Zack Snyder Comes for Thor & Loki in Animated Netflix Series

Hot ticket filmmaker Zack Snyder is set to produce an animated series about Norse mythology for Netflix, titled Twilight of the Gods.

During the announcement at Netflix’s Geeked Week which took place between the 7th and 11th of June, the Justice League and Army of the Dead helmer explained that:

“It’s my take on Norse mythology and it’s really cool. We’re doing it with Digital Dimension who are doing the animation and it’s just going to be unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Because in animation, we can do anything we want which is so fun, and fun for all of us. As the creatives involved, we just can go nuts, and I think you’re going to love it.”

Read: This ain’t your MCU’s gods.

Although details are still very sparse, Snyder confirmed that a slate of beloved actors will be joining the voice cast of Twilight of the Gods: John Noble (Fringe, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) will voice Odin, king of the Norse gods; Pilou Asbæk, of Game of Thrones fame, is set to voice the god of thunder Thor alongside Paterson Joseph as his brother and god of mischief, Loki. The cast will also feature The Walking Dead’s Lauren Cohan, Sylvia Hoeks, Stuart Martin, The Haunting of Bly Manor’s Rahul Kohli, Jamie Clayton (Sense8), Jamie Chung, Corey Stoll and appropriately, American GodsPeter Stormare.

Also on board as executive producers are Deborah Snyder and long-term collaborator Jay Olivia, the latter of whom will also serve as showrunner and director.

And that’s all she wrote, so stay tuned for further information closer to release.

Jameela Jamil Joins She-Hulk Cast As Supervillain

Jameela Jamil cast as Titania in upcoming Marvel Disney Plus series She-Hulk

Jameela Jamil has reportedly been cast as Marvel supervillain Titania in the upcoming Disney Plus series, She-Hulk. Starring Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) in the titular role, She-Hulk is a legal comedy centred around lawyer Jennifer Walters, a cousin of Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner who inherits a milder form of his Hulk powers after receiving a transfusion of his blood.

Unlike Bruce though, Jennifer can hulk out without losing control – she retains much of her emotional stability, intelligence, and overall personality. Jamil’s Titania is a frequent rival of She-Hulk and was created as part of the 1984 Marvel Secret Wars crossover event, in which Doctor Doom turns Mary MacPherran, an ordinary woman into a hulking (ha!) maniac to serve in his army of supervillains.

Jameela Jamil joins an impressive cast that also includes Hamilton star Renée Elise Goldsberry and Space Forces Ginger Gonzaga. Mark Ruffalo will also appear in his role as Bruce Banner. Perhaps most interesting is that Tim Roth will return as Emil Blonsky/the Abomination, the villain he had previously portrayed in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, which starred Edward Norton as Dr. Banner. This suggests that Titania won’t be the only supervillain She-Hulk will have to handle.

She-Hulk is expected to release in 2022, and will comprise of ten episodes. It is one of several Marvel Cinematic Universe shows premiering on Disney’s streaming platform, joining WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and most recently the critically acclaimed Loki. Other shows in the works include Secret Invasion, a story that involves the Skrulls’ long-term plot to secretly replace Marvel’s superheroes with impostors, in preparation for an invasion of Earth; the Oscar Isaac-starring Moon Knight, about a former US Marine with dissociative identity disorder who becomes a conduit for Khonshu, the Egyptian moon god; Ms. Marvel, which will introduce Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (played by Iman Vellani) ahead of The Marvels’ release; and Hawkeye, which will see the return of Clint Barton after the events of Endgame and introduce Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop/Hawkeye.

First MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: REVELATION Trailer Hits!

masters of the Universe Revelation He-Man

Continuing from where the original animated series left off in 1985, Masters of the Universe: Revelation is a new sequel series developed by filmmaker and MotU fan Kevin Smith. Today sees its first trailer released in anticipation of the show’s July 23rd premiere on Netflix, when fans will get to see the first 5 episodes (with a further batch expected later this year).

As the trailer reminds us, it was Bonnie Tyler who was “holding out for a hero”, and in terms of desperately waiting for a worthy revival of He-Man, she’s not alone! Will it do the beloved property justice? July will bring us a definitive answer, but judging by this first teaser trailer, Smith and his team look to have made something very special indeed!

Check it out below and let us know your thoughts on our socials…

Did we even mention it stars Mark Hamill as Skeletor? How badass is that!
