Toy giant Hasbro have announced a whole new range of Star Wars figures, drawing from a variety of sources in the Star Wars franchise. These toys are available for pre-order via  Hasbro Pulse UK

Of Interest to fans of The Mandalorian is a new version of Din Djarin (the titular Mandalorian) in the Juggernaut Pilot uniform as seen Chapter 15: The Believer. Years later, Mara wandered the stars as a free agent, always one step ahead of her former foe: Luke Skywalker.  Fans and collectors can display this fully articulated figure featuring premium detail and multiple points of articulation in their collection. Includes figure and 2 publishing-inspired accessories, including a lightsaber.

Unpredictable rogue archaeologist Doctor Chelli Lona Aphra is one of the galaxy’s most daring treasure hunters, and is better known to fans of Marvel Star Wars comics. Among her misadventures, she’s been recruited by Darth Vader, joined forces with Luke Skywalker, and kidnapped Hera Syndulla. But despite questionable morals and equally bad judgment, her luck hasn’t run out yet.

The Owlman Returns in Retro Paperback LORD OF TEARS

The latest publication from indie press Hex Arcana is a novelisation of Hex Studios’ cult supernatural chiller. You can pre-order the book now on Kickstarter.

Following the release of the movie, also entitled Lord of Tears, in 2013, its otherworldly villain, the Owlman, became an international phenomenon. The endlessly creepy cryptid has featured in viral videos with millions of views, been immortalised in collectable figures from Mezco Toys, and counts among his fans celebrities such as Alice Cooper and Slash. Now, for the first time, the Owlman comes to life in the pages of a novel, perhaps in his most terrifying form yet.

Adapted from Sarah Daly’s original screenplay by author Sean Hogan, writer of acclaimed volumes England’s Screaming and Deathline, Lord of Tears is a chilling, twist-filled take on a classic British ghost story.

Sarah Daly

The book follows troubled teacher James Findlay on a desperate quest for the truth behind his disturbing visions of an owl-headed figure. He returns to his childhood home in the Scottish Highlands, where it all began, and there, in the ancient halls of Baldurrock House, finds horrors beyond imagining. Will the truth set him free? Or damn him?

Lord of Tears is the second instalment in the genre publisher’s ‘80-inspired paperback series, following The Sound of His Horn, a reprint of the classic dystopian novel by Sarban. The book features an original, hand-painted cover by the legendary artist of the era, Lisa Falkenstern, and faithfully reproduces the style of the golden age of the paperback.

Lord of Tears is available to pre-order now exclusively on Kickstarter. The funds raised through sales of the book will help to support the indie publisher on its quest to revive the art of the pulp horror novel.

HARRY JOSEPHINE GILES WINS CLARKE AWARD

Clarke Award Logo

Deep Wheel Orcadia by Harry Josephine Giles and published by Picador has been announced as the 36th winner of the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the UK’s most prestigious prize for science fiction literature.

The winner was revealed at an award ceremony hosted by the Science Museum, London, and the prize presented by Dr Glyn Morgan, lead exhibition curator for the museum’s current blockbuster exhibition Science Fiction: Voyage to the Edge of Imagination.

Chair of the Judges, Dr Andrew M. Butler said: “This year the judges considered about a hundred novels with remarkable commitment and rigour. Every stage of zooming in on the winner was the conversation of informed readers at the top of their game. Deep Wheel Orcadia is the sort of book that makes you rethink what sf can do and makes the reading experience feel strange in a new and thrilling way. It’s as if language itself becomes the book’s hero and the genre is all the richer for it.”

Dr Glyn Morgan said: “It’s really exciting to bring the Clarke Award back to the Science Museum as part of the launch celebrations around our landmark new science fiction exhibition. It feels like the genre is more relevant now than ever. Not only are the issues it grapples with routinely the topic of headlines and popular discussion, but the modern genre is also more energetic and vibrant with a diverse and more representative range of writers. Today could be science fiction’s most important era as it equips our global culture not only with blockbusters and bestsellers, but also with the tools to imagine the future and choose a path for ourselves, our societies and our world.”

Harry Josephine Giles receives a trophy in the form of a commemorative engraved bookend and prize money to the value of £2022.00; a tradition that sees the annual prize money rise incrementally by year from the year 2001 in memory of Sir Arthur C. Clarke.

The judging panel for the Arthur C. Clarke Award 2021 were:

  • Crispin Black, British Science Fiction Association
  • Stark Holborn, British Science Fiction Association
  • Phoenix Alexander, Science Fiction Foundation
  • Nicole Devarenne, Science Fiction Foundation
  • Nick Hubble, SCI-FI-LONDON film festival
  • Dr Andrew M. Butler, non-voting Chair of the Judges, Serendip Foundation
