It was teased in this year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, and now Latino Review is reporting that the next X-Men movie is likely to be based around the fan favourite Dark Phoenix comic book arc.

Of course, the whole Phoenix element was previously seen in X-Men: The Last Stand, with Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey being taken over by the all-powerful Phoenix Force. In X-Men: Apocalypse, we then saw a glimpse of Sophie Turner’s young Jean battling her own demons.

Rather than the Dark Phoenix aspect being a side dish to a greater story, as shown in The Last Stand, LR is reporting that any future Phoenix outing would see that arc used as the main focus of the movie. Given how the Phoenix is seen as one of the most powerful characters in the entire Marvel comic book world – having actually defeated the world-eating Galactus at one point – it’s about time the character is given the full spotlight.

In the comic book realm, the Phoenix is a cosmic force from deepest space. With previous rumours claiming that the next X-Men movie could well head to the stars, then that opens up the possibility to use that as a way to bring the Dark Phoenix into the fold. What we’ve seen cinematically, though, has been the Phoenix being viewed as a darker side of Jean Grey’s personality.
