MY BRAIN IS SOUP, YOUR HANDS ARE THE SPOONS [Edinburgh Fringe]

One of the nice things about the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is that you occasionally catch a glimpse at some fresh and exciting talent. Chris East is one of the UK’s most underrated character comedians in the UK right now, and his latest show, My Brain is Soup, Your Hands Are the Spoons, is an incredible showcase of his talent.

The hour long show is a weird and wonderful mix of characters, repetitive gags. and short skits, as well as a touch of nostalgia and childhood regret. East has a rare skill in being both a superb mimic and having a strange and wonderful mind that simply cannot let go of a weird idea or clever gag.

My Brain is Soup, Your Hands Are the Spoons is a bit of a messy show, as the name implies. Chris uses prompts from the audience to invent entirely new characters, and these get progressively weirder and funnier as matters continue. There’s a touch of madness to the entire affair, but in a ‘cosmic horror’ fun sort of way, rather than anything more sinister.

East is a talent that needs more exposure and certainly more budget; this mix of improv and character work is a real treat and something that really needs a lot more love. Chris East is one to watch. Impressive.
