Though he’s still most known as one half of FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS, Bret McKenzie has been making a name for himself in the world of good old-fashioned show-tunes. Well, ones sung by puppets. He won the Academy Award for ‘Man or Muppet’, which appeared in 2012’s THE MUPPETS, and is working on more songs for the upcoming sequel.
More excitingly, he’s now announced that he’s working on his own script – a fantasy comedy musical in the vein of 1986’s cult classic LABYRINTH. Let’s just hope he doesn’t decide to go the whole LABYRINTH route and showcase David Bowie’s crotch – the man’s getting on a bit.
Speaking to Collider, McKenzie explained:
“It hasn’t got a name yet but it’s a fairy tale comedy musical, sort of akin to Labyrinth or something like that. I’m developing and that script’s halfway through. James Bobin’s helping me. I’m the official writer but we’re developing it. I want to make a comedy musical with singing dragons and monsters and stuff. live-action, so it would be a mixture of The Muppets and The Princess Bride.”
This should be great news for those who believe that any fantasy film would be made better with singing (even if we’d rather forget that oh-so-long opening from THE HOBBIT).
