Michelle Yeoh is the latest big name to board Universal Pictures’ film adaptation of Wicked.

Yeoh will play the role of Madame Morrible, the head of the school where Elphaba and Glinda, played respectively by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, are enrolled. Jeff Goldblum has also all but been confirmed to play the Wizard (Variety reports the actor is still in final talks), along with Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero.

Michelle Yeoh was most recently seen leading the genre-bending Everything Everywhere All At Once and will next be seen in the Witcher: Blood Origin series and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Directed by Crazy Rich Asians and In The Heights Jon M. Chu, Wicked is an alternative take on the Wizard of Oz story, recounting the friendship between the Wicked Witch of the West Elphaba and Galinda, aka Glinda the Good Witch. The musical is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel, itself a retelling of the classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and – most famously – the 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film starring Judy Garland.

Wicked is scheduled to begin filming next month, with the two-part film being shot back to back.

The first Wicked film is set to be released on December 25th, 2024, with the second coming the following Christmas.
