THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO (1966)

Made in 1966, and set one hundred years in the future, Thunderbirds Are Go was the original Thunderbirds movie, and its out now on Blu-Ray for the very first time in the UK.

Plot: John Tracy, former astronaut and billionaire industrialist, decides to use his wealth to help the world by creating “International Rescue”, a secret force of super vehicles designed by an in-house genius known simply as “Brains” and manned by his sons, each a superb athlete and trained expert in their fields.

Creator Gerry Anderson decided to base the plot of the movie on the American-Soviet Space Race, in particular the 1960s contest to land astronauts on the Moon, but adapted this story for the futuristic Thunderbirds universe by changing the destination to Mars. When the mission hits trouble, it is up to International Rescue to save the day.

THUNDERBIRD 6 (1968)

Cult 1968 movie Thunderbird 6  is released on Blu-Ray in the UK for the very first time. Written by Gerry Anderson and his wife Sylvia, and directed by David Lane (Superman: The Movie), this sequel to 1966’s Thunderbirds Are Go was the second film to be adapted from the 1960s television series Thunderbirds

Plot: The brainchild of Brains, Skyship One is a futuristic airship on the frontline of International Rescue’s crime control. But when it’s hijacked by terrorists, only a battered old Tiger Moth plane can help them save the day.

Despite it being a puppet movie, many of the stunts were done with real people and full size equipment including a famous scene where the Tiger Moth plane swoops under a motorway bridge. World War 2 pilot Joan Hughes was charged with seven counts of dangerous flying for this stunt. In addition to her court case, filming permission was revoked immediately, leading to the sequence being completed with miniatures.
