EA Disables Refunds for BATTLEFRONT II (Updated)

With three days to still go before its full release, Star Wars: Battlefront II has been hit with one controversy after another. The monetisation system in particular has been the subject of heavy criticism, and Electronic Arts’ attempts to douse the flames have led to only further fury over the past few days. No Plans For Future Batman: Arkham Games, Claims Kevin Conroy

Above all others, the Batman: Arkham series has been the benchmark for superhero games. Even counting the buggy Arkham Origins and mechanically troubled mess of Arkham Knight, the series nevertheless left a mark upon the gaming world. While fans have speculated about its return more than once, unfortunately, it looks as if Knight will be the end to this saga.

Speaking at Nashville’s Wizard Comic Con, the long-standing actor behind the Dark Knight, Kevin Conroy claimed that there were no plans for sequels. While speaking with fans, he claimed the following:

You know, I can’t believe that they’re not gonna do another one, but they’re not. Isn’t that amazing? They made literally billions of dollars on those games, but uh no, there’s no plan to do another one. Sorry.”

While Warner Bros had not commented on this subject, it confirmed the long-standing claim by Rocksteady Studios that Knight would be their final Batman title. While Warner Bros will almost certainly not let such a financially lucrative icon be forgotten, whatever we see next will likely have nothing to do with the prior quadrilogy.

Batman: The Enemy Within will debut its first chapter on August 5.

As for The Walking Dead, the brief word on this final season reads:

The Walking Dead recently wrapped up its third season, titled The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, and in its final season will finally give players control over their favorite survivor, Clementine. The new batch of episodes is set to arrive in 2018.

Then there’s The Wolf Among Us, a mesmerizing and sinister take on the beloved fairytales of yesteryear that wowed us all. On the follow-up to that beloved game, the current word reads:

Based on the award-winning Fables comic books, The Wolf Among Us was a gritty, violent, and hard-boiled thriller where the characters and creatures of myth, lore and legend are real and exist in our world. Fans of party gaming take note – a fabulous 3D role-playing game has just hit Kickstarter and is well worth looking at – Hoardcore Dungeons!

We now have a new video of the action, check it out:

From the Kickstarter blurb:

HOARDCORE DUNGEONS is a 3D team-based action role-playing game set in a subterranean land of endless danger and riches. Assemble your trio of heroes and venture down into the cavernous depths in search of the legendary hoardcore.

Despite the modern game play, the story is reminiscent of traditional light-hearted fantasy table top-style gaming sessions. Our tale takes place in the underground city of Penumbra Falls. While the city was once grand and beautiful, it has been overtaken by greed and thievery spurred by the rumours of a priceless artefact somewhere deep within the earth. When news of this tale spread above the surface it caught the attention of all kinds of hunters and adventurers, each one with their own reason to seek such an incredible treasure. But the only way to survive down there is together, so they will have to find a way to work with each other to claim what they seek. Does the legendary hoardcore really exist or is the real treasure the friends they made along the way? No, it’s definitely the hoardcore.

Creating your own party of adventurers is central to HOARDCORE DUNGEONS. Throughout the game world will be characters that you can recruit to your cause and swap into your party. Every character has unique mechanics and weapons so be sure to find them all! Design your party to suit your play style, whether that’s by creating a trio of your favourites, or challenging yourself with a lone hero, it’s all up to you!

The world of HOARDCORE DUNGEONS is divided up into many unique zones, each with different enemies and treasures. The more you fight, explore, and quest through each area the more secrets and rewards you will discover. Make sure you’re thorough, as there is much more in the depths than meets the eye!

STAR TREK Boldly Arrives to Roleplay

After months of playtesting, speculation and geeky fun, the Star Trek roleplaying game, Star Trek Adventures, has arrived and is now available for pre-order.

Star Trek has had tabletop roleplaying games before, but they’ve lacked the broad scope of the franchise and tended to be pretty old-fashioned in design. Modiphus’s latest offering promises to be an up to date and thrilling experience, dropping you into the most interesting eras of the Star Trek Universe.

Most of us will want to get Star Trek Adventures: Core Rulebook, but hardcore fans may want to get their hands on Star Trek Adventures Borg Cube Collector’s Edition Box Set. This Borg Cube-shaped box contains pretty much everything you need to roleplay in the Star Trek Universe, allowing you to boldly game where no one has gamed before. The snazzy box includes dice, core rulebooks, laser engraved token, posters and more.

There’s also a pile of scale models of various heroes and villains from the show. Let’s face it, everyone needs a tiny Captain Picard in their lives.

Those with slightly more modest budgets can order the books and the cube by going for the Borg Drone option; who doesn’t want to bring a drone home? You can pre-order all of these lovely things on the Modiphus website here.

Periodic Table of Games

What are the key games in all the gaming genres? UK Games Expo Programme designer, Matthew Comben and the man behind the design of our souvenir art this year had a cracking idea: a Periodic Table of Games, organised in gaming genres. We all put our thinking caps on and came up with a list from which this amazing poster was created. It lists abstract games, children’s games, family games, RPGs, wargames, board games and CCGs and others.

Settlers of Catan is on there as is Pathfinder, Magic: the Gathering and Little Wars; 118 games in all. Are the choices right? Are your favourites on the list? We don’t want to spoil the surprise by showing the whole thing, but here is a part. You can see the poster at UKGE, where it will be on sale exclusively at UK Games Expo at the bargain price of £4 for an A2 poster.

To buy yours, head over to the UKGE MERC stand T4 in Hall 1

UK Games Expo takes place at Birmingham’s NEC and nearby NEC Hilton Metropole Hotel over the three days – June 2nd to 4th – and is a mecca for everything games related from card to board, LARP and beyond.

Hawk Wargames will be there with Dropfleet Commander, Catan Studios will be showing lots of variants of Catan, Warcradle Studios will be showing off Wild West Exodus and Paizo is visiting for the first time and making announcements about Starfinder – a much-awaited extension of Pathfinder into the far future.

Arcade Café KONBO to Open in Edinburgh

Konbo, a speciality arcade café with classic gaming machines, will open in Edinburgh on Saturday, May 13th.

The first establishment of its kind in the Scottish capital is the brainchild of business owner Michael Cox, who found himself inspired by Japan’s vibrant arcade scene. He aims to emulate their inclusive passion and recreate their lively part of popular culture that draws in customers from every walk of life. Reasoning that cafés are already places where people of all ages gather, adding arcade machines into that environment was merely a logical extension.

Along the way, he also hopes to reclaim this country’s notion of arcades as staples of decaying seaside resorts with poorly-maintained coin-swallowing machines housed in run-down buildings with crumbling walls and sticky floors, and bring their perception more in line with the something you might see amidst the effervescent energy of the otaku cultural hub of Akihabara in Tokyo, and has even mimicked their atmosphere by importing Japanese arcade stools and posters.

The stock of over forty games will be rotated regularly through the café’s six machines and includes a wide variance such as classics like Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Final Fight and Ghosts & Goblins; bullet-hell shoot-‘em-ups like DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou and Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi; hardcore fighting games like Capcom vs SNK 2 and Garou: Mark of the Wolves; and Japanese classics little known in the West such as Puyo Puyo Tsu and Detana!! Twinbee. Rather than going down the more straightforward route of using emulators, all the games will operate from original PCBs, some of which are now extremely rare and seldom seen outside the hands of private collectors.

The machines themselves are Japanese imports housing games from the late ‘80s and ‘90s (“a golden age of gaming,” Cox declared), and as the culture of that time is currently undergoing a resurgence fuelled by nostalgia (when did the ‘90s become retro? *quietly sobs*), it will give children of the era the opportunity to enjoy them all over again, and hopefully gain new fans in younger people who are experiencing them for the first time.

“Konbo aims to give people a chance to experience these original games running on vintage hardware, in person with your friends,” Cox commented. “With this approach, I hope we can bring back a little of the community feeling of arcade gaming.”

Konbo’s location on Gilmore Place is a short walk away from Fountain Park and Cineworld, so it will be simple to move straight from one kind of glorious cultural environment to another, and the arcade café will open its doors to the world on Saturday, May 13th.

More information can be found on the cafe’s website, and updates are available on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

MARIO X RABBIDS RPG is Finally Happening?

In the run up to the reveal of the Nintendo Switch, Laura K Dale was the source of many insider leaks about the console which turned out to be true. According to Kotaku, they have been approached by a source which corroborates another one of Dale’s leaks; the existence of a Mario x Rabbids crossover (entitled ‘Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle’).

Kotaku’s source remains unnamed but they provided assets for the game, and it is believed that the game will be coming to the Switch in August or September of this year.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is pegged to include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and four Rabbids (dressed up as those characters) as playable characters in the game. The game is set to include local co-op and will apparently be a turn-based RPG.

There is a lesson to be learned from this. In the aftermath of Nintendo’s January reveal, the lack of any announcement on the crossover was used as a way of deriding Laura Dale and the information she provided. This latest information should serve to remind that sometimes it is better to wait and see before passing judgment.
