Marvel Studios has switched up their Don Cheadle-starring project: Armor Wars will no longer be headed to Disney+ as a series but is getting redeveloped as a big-screen feature film, THR reports.

Don Cheadle remains on board to star, reprising his long-time Marvel Cinematic Universe role as Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes, aka War Machine. Series head writer Yassir Lester will remain as the screenplay scribe. No director had yet been attached.

Armor Wars had reportedly been eyeing a 2023 production start, though the project’s redevelopment means it’ll be pushed further down Marvel’s slate.

We don’t know much about Armor Wars other than it was intended as a six-episode event series. As for what the plot might involve, we can assume it will take inspiration from the celebrated Iron Man storyline of the same name, published in 1987 and ’88. The comic run tackled the consequences of Iron Man’s highly advanced tech falling into the wrong hands. We can surmise that, given the focus on armours, the project will also feature Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams/Ironheart – the character will be introduced later this year in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, before getting her own series.

Rhodey/War Machine will next appear in the Disney+ series Secret Invasion, which also stars Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn and will debut in 2023.
