John David Washington is starring in a supernatural horror film called Mime, which has just been acquired by Sony’s Screen Gems. Nikyatu Jusu, who made her feature directorial debut with the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Nanny, is directing.

Stephen Herman wrote the spec screenplay, based on his original idea, but plot details are otherwise being kept under wraps. Deadline reports only that “it’s a movie set in a New York City apartment complex in the middle of a heat wave blackout.”

Producing are Matt Tolmach and The Black Phone filmmaker Scott Derrickson via his Crooked Highway banner. Washington is also producing along with Tolmach’s partner, Camila Grove.

John David Washington broke out in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, and went on to star in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and Gareth Edwards’ The Creator. He most recently starred in the period drama-turned-horror, The Piano Lesson. Other works include Amsterdam and Malcolm & Marie.

Screen Gems reportedly beat out Amazon and Searchlight for Mime in a competitive bidding war. While the project is in active development, sources report filming is expected to begin next spring. There’s no word yet on who may be appearing opposite Washington, but expect further news soon as things move ahead.
