Banjong Pisanthanakun, the filmmaker behind horror films The Medium and Shutter, is debuting his demonic psychological horror film Inherit at the Toronto International Film Festival. The trailer has just been released.

The film stars Davika Hoorne – from Cannes Critics’ Week Grand Prize winner A Useful Ghost – as Woranart, who returns home looking as young and beautiful as when she disappeared 50 years ago. However, she has not returned for a reunion with her wealthy family, but rather as the vessel of an ancient centipede spirit that seeks to pass its curse onto Woranart’s 18-year-old granddaughter, Oui (Baipor Thitiya Jirapornsilp). Sinjai Plengpanich, Trin Settachoke and Warattaya Nilkuha also star.

Pisanthanakun directs from a script he co-wrote with Thamsatid Charoenrittichai and Chantavit Dhanasevi, based on the classic 1991 Thai horror novel Tayard Asoon (Heir of the Demon) by Thep Chumsai Na Ayutthaya.

The director previously told ScreenDaily that this story had been stuck with him since childhood: “At its core, it’s a story about power, legacy, and the darkness we inherit. It’s a Thai story but told with the scale and sophistication that international audiences crave.”

South Korean film studio Barunson E&A (behind Parasite) has come aboard the project from Thai production house GDH 559, taking on international sales duties across North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa.
