Following the unexpected (and hasty) departure of executive producer Caroline Skinner earlier this year, the BBC have announced that Brian Minchin will be joining continuing show runner/executive producer Steven Moffat to work on future episodes of Doctor Who.

Minchin is no stranger either to worlds of Doctor Who or fantasy TV in general having been the producer of The Sarah Jane Adventures, executive producer on BBC3’s Being Human, BBC4’s Dirk Gently and CBBC‘s Wizards Vs Aliens, the UK-based section of Torchwood’s ‘Miracle Day’ series, and assistant producer on Torchwood’s acclaimed mini-series ‘Children of Earth’. He’s currently executive producer on The Game, a BBC Cold War spy thriller created by Being Human’s Toby Whithouse. Minchin is quoted as saying: “I’m thrilled and excited to be joining Steven Moffat on a show that has meant so much to me over the years. I’ve watched in awe as Steven has taken Doctor Who to wild and imaginative places and I can’t wait to get started on many more adventures with the Doctor.”

Moffat himself commented “When I first took over Doctor Who, Brian was there as script editor, and in the most difficult time of a new Doctor and a new era, was completely brilliant. We lost him to producing The Sarah Jane Adventures at the end of our first run. Rising talent keeps rising, is how I comforted myself back then – but now I am beyond happy that Brian has risen all the way back to Doctor Who, in his new role of executive producer. I look forward to getting hopelessly lost in space and time with him.”

The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special is currently filming in South Wales and a Christmas Special will be filmed later in the year. Although an eighth season is believed to have been commissioned, no confirmation has been released by the BBC and the participation of current star Matt Smith beyond the Christmas Special is still the subject of much speculation.
