Bates Motel

We recently learned that ORPHAN’s Vera Farmiga would be playing Norma in BATES MOTEL, and now A&E have announced who will take on the lead role of her smothered son, Norman. Step forward Freddie Highmore, former child star best known for his excellent debut in uber-weepy FINDING NEVERLAND, and for his role as Charlie in Tim Burton’s 2005 adaptation of Dahl’s CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.

Personally, I think the casting of Highmore is pretty much bob on (we already know the guy can act, and just look at that picture above!), and the more I hear about this show the more I’m intrigued to see what LOST co-showrunner Carlton Cuse can come up with.

For those that have missed earlier stories, here’s the synopsis for a little background:

‘BATES MOTEL gives viewers an intimate understanding of how Norman Bates’ psyche developed from his childhood through his teen years. Fans will have access to the dark, twisted backstory and learn first hand how his mother, Norma, and her love damaged Norman, helped forge the most well-known serial killing motel owner in history.’

BATES MOTEL opens its door early 2013.
