After an incredible year that’s seen Sydney Sweeney star in HBO’s The White Lotus and Euphoria, the actress is now jumping into Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters. Deadline reports that Sweeney has joined Dakota Johnson in the upcoming superhero pic Madame Web in an unknown role.

S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) directs from a script by Morbius duo Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, with Kerem Sanga having written a previous draft. Madame Web was introduced as Cassandra Webb, an elderly blind woman on life support who possesses clairvoyant and precognitive abilities. Given Johnson’s casting, it’s more likely that Sony’s iteration of the character will centre on Julia Carpenter, the second person to adopt the Madame Web mantle. In the comics, Cassandra passed her powers of precognition and her blindness onto Julia right before she was killed.

Some fans have speculated that Sydney Sweeney will play Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen in Madame Web, but Sony are staying tight-lipped on the matter.

Madame Web will be the first female-led film in Sony Pictures’ universe of Marvel heroes, joining Spider-Man, Venom and very soon, Morbius. Another upcoming film within the Sony universe includes Kraven the Hunterstarring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Fred Hechinger and Ariana DeBose and directed by J.C. Chandor; The Sinister Six, Nightwatch, and Jackpot are also amongst some of the projects in development.
