A follow-up to J.J. Abrams’ STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS has been on the cards for a while now, although no specifics were known in terms of start date or release date. All that we knew was, if the film was to cash in on the 50th anniversary of the franchise – it started back in 1966 – then it needed to get its arse into gear over the next few months. Well it looks like things could finally be moving forward.

Speaking to NBC’s Today, Zachary Quinto, the recent movies’ Spock, revealed, “I think it’s on the horizon. Things are rumbling, so I have a feeling we’ll be back in production sometime in the next six months.”

A script for a third movie in this relaunched series was handed to Paramount earlier this year by Roberto Orci, J.D. Payne, and Patrick McKay, so it seems that there’s clearly enough to the screenplay for the studio to be looking at moving forward. With Abrams now busy with a certain film from a galaxy far, far away, this next STAR TREK movie has Orci taking on directing duties.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
