KNIGHTCLUB  [Edinburgh Fringe]

Knightclub is a comedic tale of two monks who set up a special club in their monastery, so they can train to be monks. They call this a Knight Club, and are clear that it isn’t about dancing to sick beats. In fact, the first rule of Knight Club is not to talk about Knight Club. Which is a very bad idea if you’re trying to talk about a show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, so we’ll ignore that rule.

They, of course, get kicked out of the monastery, and wackiness ensues. There’s a lot of wackiness, some very silly set pieces and a little bit of social commentary. Combined with a budget that is practically invisible, what we get is a very funny but also scrappy show that very much embraces the spirit of fringe comedy.

Knightclub is the latest show from Spruce Moose, a comedy team that has been gently gathering a cult following over the last year or so.  The story is essentially a series of comedic skits hung together with some fairly strong character work and some deeply daft puns. This fresh-faced group are very funny and oozes confidence and charisma.

One of the things that older genre and comedy fans have begun to realise is that Monty Python and The Holy Grail is no longer the comedic cultural touchstone that it once was. Instead, the younger folk are all about the CBBC  TV series Horrible Histories.  This seems to be a source of inspiration for Knightclub in terms of slapstick humour and commitment to see even the silliest of ideas to their very dumb conclusion.

Dumb, budget fun, and filled with potential. Go see Spruce Moose before they get famous.
