For fans of Penny Dreadful, there’s some sad news as the show has officially been axed following its third season.

The Season 3 finale, which aired earlier this week in the US, ended with the words “The End” on screen, and that is exactly what it was. The show, which starred the likes of Josh Hartnett, Eva Green and Timothy Dalton in a dark and twisted world full of famous literary names, had amassed quite the following.

Creator John Logan confirmed the show’s axing to Deadline, saying, “I can absolutely confirm it is really over, the end – that’s all she wrote.” He elaborated by describing the show as a poem and explained how some poems are meant to be “haikus and some are meant to be sonnets and some are meant to be enormous epics, and this was always meant to be a sonnet. It was something of grace and beauty. I think we’ve been able to achieve that in a really masterful way with the artists that I work with, everyone’s work. I think this is the right ending, so for me to revisit that world would seem inorganic, I think.”

Since debuting in 2014, Penny Dreadful went on to win a host of awards as it received praise from both fans and critics alike. Sadly, it appears that this is indeed the end for this eerie series.
