Ben Affleck to be Replaced as Batman?

While we’ve all been impressed by Ben Affleck’s portrayal of the Caped Crusader, if we’re honest then we have to say all seems a tad problematic with the first solo picture for Affleck’s Dark Knight. And now, it seems as if another major problem has reared its head.

Having debuted as the World’s Greatest Detective in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Affleck’s Batman was quickly confirmed to be getting his own movie – titled simply The Batman. Now while Batman v Superman was largely so-so at best, the biggest plus point of that film was hands-down Affleck as Bats, and so we were all a tad excited to hear that Affleck himself would be directing this Bat-pic as well as writing it with DC’s hugely popular Geoff Johns. And you have to remember, Affleck as a director has wowed many with the likes of Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and Argo – even nabbing the Best Picture Oscar for Argo to go with the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award he got for Good Will Hunting.

Then came rumblings that Affleck wasn’t particularly happy with the way Warner Brothers were putting together their DC Extended Universe, with him notably saying how he wouldn’t make The Batman unless he was completely happy with the story and the future plans. That, in turn, was then followed by Affleck decided against directing The Batman. Then, in came War for the Planet of the Apes’ Matt Reeves to direct the film – who only this month has revealed that he’s decided to completely scrap the screenplay and story already put in place by Affleck and Johns.

Now, as per The Hollywood Reporter, it’s believed that it could very well be that Affleck’s time as the Dark Knight comes to an end after this year’s Justice League. At this stage, both parties seem unhappy with where things are right now. Given how the rumours are that The Batman will be the start of a trilogy of movies, it seems that it’s vital that a decision is made one way or another on Affleck’s future before things get rolling with the first leg of the trio of pictures.

On Affleck’s part, he’s unhappy with the way the DCEU is being handled and has regularly been rumoured to be walking away from the Batman gig over the past year or so. For Warners, their angle is that they’re planning for the long term and are even now supposedly getting a little bit of cold feet at having a nearly-45-year-old Caped Crusader lining up alongside his younger Justice League colleagues. Then again, this is the same studio who purposely wanted to depict an older, grizzled, war-weary Batman in their DCEU, so you can’t have it both ways.

Additionally, as well as The Batman to potentially launch a trilogy, there’s Joss Whedon’s Batgirl and Chris McKay’s Nightwing now in development, which will both be films that will likely have at least some involvement from the World’s Greatest Detective. And given how Affleck’s Batman was used in last year’s Suicide Squad, the WB could well be eyeing a similar sort of role for him in Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens. Either way, the Batman gig is certainly a major commitment; a commitment that Affleck seems to be having serious second thoughts on.

As ever, expect more on all of this as we get it. What we do know for sure, though, is that Affleck’s Caped Crusader will be next seen in Justice League this November.

Todd McFarlane to Direct SPAWN for Blumhouse

After what seems like forever, it’s now official: we’re getting a Spawn reboot!

For those who have been keeping up with all things Spawn, you’ll be well aware that creator Todd McFarlane was looking to bring the character back to the big screen in a big way. One of the stumbling blocks, though, seemed to be the fact that McFarlane wasn’t budging on the demand that he writes and directs the picture.

Now, McFarlane has taken to his Facebook page to officially announce that he and his McFarlane Films division are partnering with Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions for a new Spawn movie. And yes, the film will indeed be written and directed by none other than Todd McFarlane – marking the comic book legend’s directorial debut. Additionally, the first draft of the screenplay has already been written and now it’s all systems go for this cult favourite comic book character.

As McFarlane himself explained, “We’ve gone from the theoretical to now we’re making movies. Blumhouse. Spawn. Badass. R. Get ready for it, we’re going into production. No more talking, it’s time to do.”

From the Blumhouse side, Jason Blum added, “Having worked with many visionary directors, I think Todd’s unique artistic talents will only add to his role as director of this film.”

The character of Spawn debuted back in 1992’s Spawn #1, with the dark and brutal figure soon becoming a poster boy of sorts for the antihero side of comics. With his Hellspawn power, Spawn is able to shape shift, teleport, and cause all kinds of carnage with his various weapons. Of course, the character has already been brought to live-action life, with Michael Jai White headlining the 1997 Spawn feature. Elsewhere, HBO later developed an animated miniseries called Todd McFarlane’s Spawn.

As ever, expect more on this new Spawn picture as it continues to develop.

Check Out THE FUTURE BOYS Online Now

Following a successful Kickstarter campaign at the beginning of 2017, the first 2 episodes of The Future Boys have been released online.

The show’s official synopsis is:
Having spent two years apart and taken up new identities, Tyler and Gary are unwittingly brought back together by Rik Sheringham, a galaxy-renowned treasure hunter, celebrity and old school friend/enemy of Tyler’s. Sheringham’s deal is simple – Tyler and Gary must undergo a series of daring and dangerous heists on his behalf, or be handed over to the authorities and forced to face the death sentence that has been looming over their heads for years. Can Tyler and Gary re-unite and stay on the same page long enough to complete the job? Or are they doomed to fail? Either way, there seems to be more to the jobs than a simple robbery, or Sheringham’s intentions may not be all they seem…

The Future Boys stars Cliff Chapman as Tyler and Adam Joselyn as Gary, with Emma Stirling and Robert Dearn supporting. Written, directed, and created by Steve Jordan, it was recorded in front of a live audience at the Leicester Square Theatre and is available for free download from iTunes and Soundcloud and to listen to on YouTube.

As well as being part of Bad Bat Productions (with Ellen Gallagher), creator Steve Jordan has just been commissioned to write a Doctor Who audio drama for Big Finish.

Noah Hawley Developing DOCTOR DOOM Movie

In some interesting news, it appears that a Doctor Doom movie is in development.

This news comes from San Diego Comic-Con, with Legion showrunner Noah Hawley letting the cat out of the bag. As the Legion panel came to a close, Hawley teased, “Because I’m at Comic-Con, I wanted to let you know about a movie I’m developing for Fox. The first word is Doctor. And the second is Doom.”

And that was that. Nothing more, nothing less.

In a follow-up to that, The Hollywood Reporter claims that Hawley is developing the picture with a view to himself directing it. If true, that would mark his feature film directing debut, although he has previously directed episodes of Fargo and Legion.

Given that 20th Century Fox recently booked in release dates for six unconfirmed movies, it could well be that this Doom flick ends up nabbing one of those dates. As mentioned, nothing more is known on all of this right now, and it remains to be seen if and how such a film would fit in with Fox’s existing Marvel properties – as in the X-Men franchise and its spinoffs, and, of course, The Fantastic Four.

Interestingly, an early report from Bleeding Cool claims that Legion star Dan Stevens is in the frame for a role in the Doom film, potentially even as the titular rogue. Noah Hawley developing? Dan Stevens starring? That would certainly be fine with us!

As a character, Doctor Victor Von Doom was created by the prolific pairing of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby back in 1962. Primarily a Fantastic Four villain, the power-mad dictator of Latveria is one of the most intelligent, intense tacticians in the comic book world. In addition to his genius, he also has a penchant for magic and has his trusty Doombots at his disposal.

On the big screen, Julian McMahon played Doom in Tim Story’s Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and more recently Toby Kebbell played the character in Josh Trank’s turd-tastic Fantastic Four.

As ever, expect more on this as we get it.

Universal Want Channing Tatum for VAN HELSING

With Universal having now got their ‘Dark Universe’ of shared monster movies off to a start with the (frankly so-so, at best) new take on The Mummy, now comes some interesting news on another of the studio’s rebooted beastie-based properties.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures is eagerly pursuing Channing Tatum in the hopes of getting him to headline their upcoming Van Helsing reboot. Previously, Tom Cruise was actually up for that role back in 2012 before he signed on to star in The Mummy. Now, it appears that the Jump Street and Magic Mike star is the clear frontrunner when it comes to who is in demand to take on the Abraham Van Helsing role.

The last we’d heard on Van Helsing was at the start of the year when Wrath of the Titans’ Dan Mazeu was brought in to rework the screenplay previously put in place by Arrival’s Eric Heisserer and Doctor Strange’s Jon Spaihts.

Despite some believing that the poor critical and commercial response to The Mummy may throw a major spanner into Universal’s Dark Universe plans, the studio is intent on moving forward as planned with this shared cinematic realm. Up next for this world, Beauty and the Beast’s Bill Condon is directing February 2019’s Bride of Frankenstein – which is still doing its best to get Angelina Jolie signed up to star. Elsewhere, Johnny Depp is to take the titular role in The Invisible Man, Javier Bardem is signed on to play the famed monster in Frankenstein, Dwayne Johnson is wanted to star in The Wolfman, Scarlett Johansson is the favourite to headline The Creature From the Black Lagoon, and then there are plans afoot for the Phantom of the Opera and the Hunchback of Notre Dame to get their own Dark Universe pictures. Tying all of this together, of course, will be Russell Crowe’s Dr. Jekyll and the Prodigium organisation introduced in The Mummy.

As for the Van Helsing character, he was created by Bram Stoker as part of Dracula back in 1897. In that novel and beyond, Abraham Van Helsing has battled the bloodsucker and many other notable beastly creatures. On the big screen, Edward Van Sloan first played the character in 1931’s Dracula, then came Peter Cushing in Hammer’s Dracula franchise, Sir Laurence Olivier in 1979’s Dracula, Sir Anthony Hopkins in 1992’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and then Hugh Jackman in the 2004 Van Helsing picture.

Expect more on Van Helsing and the entire Dark Universe as we get it.

LEGION Adds Said Taghmaoui as the Shadow King

Fresh from the ongoing San Diego Comic-Con, Legion has confirmed a major addition for its second season.

Courtesy of the FX show’s panel, it was announced that Lost and Wonder Woman’s Said Taghmaoui has joined the series as the nefarious Shadow King – a character already alluded to and outright seen at several points in the show’s debut season.

On this news, the network quickly went on to describe the Shadow King as a villain with a thousand faces. In his real form, he is always nattily dressed. Dapper with a thin Clark Gable style moustache. His eyes forever hidden behind a pair of ornate sunglasses. He was hip long before there was such an idea. He can seductively hold court on any topic and in any language, but his true passion lies in the singular timeless notion of power and amassing as much of it as possible… It is rumoured he is the spawn of the first nightmare, which is fitting because fear is his weapon of choice in exposing weakness in others. To Farouk, fear equals weakness and he fears nothing. Which is why he takes such delight in seeing others squirm – a reminder he is more powerful than them.”

In the comic book world, Amahl Farouk, aka the Shadow King, was created by Chris Claremont, debuting in 1979’s Uncanny X-Men #117. There, he is often depicted as an eerie, sinister, telepathic immortal presence who has caused all kinds of problems for Professor X and his X-Men over the decades.

For Legion’s second season, no other major details are known just yet bar the fact that the episode count will be upped from eight to ten.

As ever, expect more on Legion as its second year continues to develop.

Title Revealed for New Season of AMERICAN HORROR STORY

While we’ve known for a little while now that the upcoming seventh season of American Horror Story was to be inspired by last year’s US presidential election, creator Ryan Murphy has now moved to confirm what the title of this new season will be.

Coming out of Comic-Con, it’s been revealed that Season 7 of the fan favourite genre show will be titled American Horror Story: Cult. Accompanying this reveal was a brief video… but, as ever, with AHS, said video doesn’t really clarify all that much bar showing off plenty of eerie clowns and bees.

On board for American Horror Story: Cult are Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Billy Eichner, Cheyenne Jackson, Billie Lourd, Adina Porter, Alison Pill, Leslie Grossman, Colton Haynes, and Lena Dunham. The new season will premiere on FX on September 5th – although there’s no news just yet on when Cult will premiere in the UK.

AMC Adapting Cronenberg’s CONSUMED

In some rather fantastic news, David Cronenberg’s Consumed is being adapted for the small screen.

As per Deadline, Cronenberg’s 2014 novel is being turned into a drama series at AMC – the home of The Walking Dead. Already confirmed to be developing the show are Fear the Walking Dead’s Dave Erickson and Lucifer’s Sheri Elwood, with the pair writing the hour-long episodes and serving as executive producers alongside Cronenberg. Additionally, there are already stories out there that claim Cronenberg himself could very well end up directing at least some of the episodes, but that’s simply educated guess work at this point.

For those not familiar with Consumed, the official blurb has it pegged as “a mind-bending psychological thriller that follows two journalists who set out to solve the cannibalistic murder of a controversial Parisian photographer.”

As ever, expect more on this as we get it.
