The HELLBOY Reboots Adds Ed Skrein

As the Hellboy reboot continues to assemble its cast, the film has added Ed Skrein to its ranks.

Courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, the Deadpool actor has landed the role of Major Ben Daimio – a character described as “a rugged military member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense who, due to a supernatural encounter, can turn into a jaguar when angered or in pain.”

Already on board for Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen are David Harbour as the titular Big Red, Ian McShane as Professor Broom, Sasha Lane as love interest Alice Monaghan, and Milla Jovovich as the villainous Blood Queen. Genre fave Neil Marshall is on board to direct.

KNIGHT RIDER Redo Eyes John Cena and Kevin Hart

At a time when the term “original idea” seems like a totally foreign concept where certain studios are concerned, now comes word that a new Knight Rider reboot is being eyed.

Interestingly, David Hasselhoff himself has recently being talking about how he’d like to revisit Knight Rider in a way that is similar to this year’s mesmerising Logan. But moving away from that, as per Screen Rant, a new Knight Rider is indeed being worked on, just not in the way that The Hoff envisioned.

Instead, The Weinstein Company is looking to bring the property back to life with a comedic slant similar to what was done with 21 Jump Street. Lined up for the role of Michael Knight is multi-time WWE Champion John Cena – who has recently been cast for the Transformers spinoff, Bumblebee – and Central Intelligence’s Kevin Hart is being eyed to provide the voice of Knight’s famed car KITT. Neither Cena or Hart have been cast at this stage, but this should certainly give you an idea of the direction that this redo is looking to take. And, of course, while the Jump Street franchise was pretty well received when revisited, cinematic attempts to bring back CHIPS and Baywatch have landed flat this year, much like the 2010 reboot of The A-Team.

Knight Rider began life back in 1982, starring Hasselhoff as Michael Knight and running for four seasons. Following that came Knight Rider 2000, which was in turn followed by the rejigged 2008 Knight Rider series. That ’08 redo only lasted for one solitary season before being canned, but as recently as last year there’s been talk of having another crack at this beloved property, with Star Trek Beyond’s Justin Lin in the frame to direct at that point.

As ever, expect more on this as we get it.

Katee Sackhoff Joins THE FLASH

In some news that’s sure to bring a smile to the face of many a genre fan, Katee Sackhoff has landed a role in the upcoming fourth season of The CW’s The Flash.

As per EW, the Battlestar Galactica, Riddick and Halloween: Resurrection favourite has joined the Scarlet Speedster-centric series as the villainous Amunet Black, aka Blacksmith; a character officially described as a “steely and badass boss of an underground black market for supervillains” who will use any means necessary – and the whole host of metahumans under her charge – to make sure that she gets what she wants. In terms of the comic book incarnation of the character, Amunet Black debuted in 2001’s Flash: Iron Heights. Blacksmith will debut in the fifth episode of Season 4, and she joins fellow newcomers in the shape of Harley Swayer as Ralph Dibny/Elongated Man, Danny Trejo as nefarious bounty hunter Breacher, Kim Engelbrecht as the hulking, devastating Mechanic, and Neil Sandilands as the ‘big bad’ of the season, The Thinker.

The Flash premieres in the US on October 10th, with a UK airing expect to follow shortly after that date.

Brian Aldiss 1925 – 2017

Grand Master of Science Fiction Brian Aldiss passed away Saturday, August 19th. He had just turned 92 the previous day.

Aldiss wrote over 100 books and more than 300 short stories during his long and distinguished career. His awards included one John W. Campbell Memorial Award, two Hugo Awards and a Nebula. Aldiss was also awarded the OBE for services to literature in 2005.

Known for works such as Non-stop, Hothouse and The Helliconia Trilogy, he is perhaps best known for his Super Toys short stories which were adapted into the Kubrick/Spielberg movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence. His book Greybeard has been cited as one of the greatest science fiction works to deal with the subject of depression, and his razor-sharp intelligence and witty writing is seen as one the critical bridging points between mainstream fiction and genre.

In an interview with STARBURST Magazine two years ago, his advice to young authors was “Try not to age. Get laid as often as possible.” He will be greatly missed.

Jabba and Boba Fett Movies in Development

Following last week’s news that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie was now officially in development, now comes word on other potential Star Wars spinoff pictures.

As per Variety, Disney is reportedly in early development on solo films for both Boba Fett and Jabba the Hutt. Ever since it was revealed that the House of Mouse was looking to do Star Wars Story movies – such as last year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the currently-shooting to-be-titled young Han Solo film – alongside their main new trilogy of pictures, there’s been plenty of speculation that Fett, not to mention Yoda, could get the solo movie treatment. Jabba the Hutt, though? That’s a pretty new one on us – and one we’d likely say to maybe take with a fairly heft grain of salt for now.

Details are extremely scarce on all of this right now, but it certainly looks like Disney are eager to continually turn out new movies in order to keep Star Wars fans shilling out their pennies.

Where that Kenobi film is concerned, the latest we’ve heard is that Billy Elliot’s Stephen Daldry is in talks to direct, with the story to centre on how Obi-Wan became plain old Ben Kenobi between the events of Revenge of the Sith and 1977’s Star Wars (or A New Hope to you more modern sorts).

As ever, expect more on all of this as and when we get it. Up next for all things a galaxy far, far away is Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which hits the big screen this December.

Two Names in Contention to Direct JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK

Despite having spent years in the proverbial development hell, Justice League Dark is still supposedly happening. And now, there’s some new details on just who may be tasked with directing this look into the dark and magical corner of the DC world.

Previously, Guillermo del Toro had spent years developing the project before ultimately having to walk away due to commitments elsewhere. Following that, Edge of Tomorrow’s Doug Liman took over the director’s chair in 2015 before he also eventually departed the film, and Warner Brothers has been on the lookout for a new director ever since.

According to Grace Randolph, as per Latino Review, there are now two names being considered to step in and helm Justice League Dark. Those names are Safe House and Life’s Daniel Espinosa and Housebound’s Gerard Johnstone. To us, both of these would be great choices. While Espinosa is clearly for the more well-known of the pair, it’s also fantastic to see Johnstone in the running for such a big gig given how we’re all huge fans of horror-comedy Housebound here at Moonbase Alpha.

As ever, expect to hear more on the cinematic adventures of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Deadman, and the rest of the gang as we get it.

Hopes High for DEATH NOTE Sequel

Ahead of Death Note landing on Netflix this Friday, there’s already early talk of a follow-up for the latest adaptation of a long-standing favourite of many.

Speaking at a press event for the film, as reported by Latino Review, producer Masi Oka was asked about whether a Death Note follow-up is something that has been considered. Oka enthused, “We would love to, because they way the movie ends, we leave that question open, right? Also, the creators [Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata], they had the comment, ‘I can’t wait to see what happens next.’ So they’re definitely on board. I think at the end of the day, it’s in the hands of our fans and Netflix.”

As ever with looking ahead to further outings for such a project, it all comes down to how well received this new take on an old favourite is. Certainly there’s plenty more of this story to tell given the vast array of source material to pull from.

Beginning life as a manga series, Death Note has gone on to be adaptated as an anime, a live-action Japanese movie, a TV drama, a musical, and pretty much crossed over in to any medium imaginable. Now, from You’re Next’s Adam Wingard and starring Paper Town’s Nat Wolff and cult favourite Willem Dafoe, the property is getting its first English-language live-action adaptation.

The official synopsis for Death Note reads:

Based on the famous Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds within it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone’s name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life.

You can make your own mind up on this new adaptation when Death Note lands on Netflix this coming Friday.

First Synopsis for UNBREAKABLE and SPLIT Sequel

One of the biggest cinematic shockers in recent memory was the reveal that M. Night Shyamalan’s Split was actually a sequel of sorts to Unbreakable. With that cat now long out of the bag, pre-production is set to start shortly on the Unbreakable and Split follow-up, Glass. And now, we’ve finally got our first official synopsis on that forthcoming picture.

At this early stage, the first blurb on this hotly anticipated sequel reads:

Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds David Dunn pursuing Kevin Wendell Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Elijah Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.

Where Split is concerned, the shocking finale saw Bruce Willis’ David Dunn appear as we were all left with our jaws agape. As mentioned in that short synopsis, Willis will indeed be back for Glass, as will James McAvoy, Samuel L. Jackson, and Anya Taylor-Joy. In terms of new additions to this “franchise”, American Horror Story’s Sarah Paulson joined the cast earlier this month.

At present, with shooting set to start in October, Glass is set for a January 18th, 2019 release.

GOTHAM Brings in Marina Benedict and Benjamin Stockham

Despite its third season still yet to air here in the UK, Gotham has moved to bring in a couple of new additions ahead of its fourth season beginning next month in the US.

As per TVLine, Prison Break’s Marina Benedict has signed on to play Cherry, the owner of a shady fight club based in the famed Narrows. The early word on this character is that she is someone who will at times be a help and at other times be a hindrance to the GCPD. Elsewhere, About a Boy’s Benjamin Stockham has joined the series as somebody who befriends David Mazouz’s Bruce Wayne.

The current synopsis for this new season reads:

Gotham Season 4 will witness the emergence of the criminal landscape for which Gotham City is best known, with Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock at the forefront of the fight against the most depraved and unhinged villains. While Gotham City fights for normalcy, a new hero will rise, as Bruce Wayne begins to assume responsibility for the city’s well-being.

As mentioned, Gotham has yet to even air its third season here in the UK yet. The show was airing on Channel 5 initially for its first two seasons, before those seasons would later land on Netflix. For Season 3, though, Channel 5 has yet to air any of those episodes, although the season is set for a Blu-ray and DVD release on August 28th. Following that, the current word is that the third season should arrive on Netflix from September 1st.

Of course, in the meantime, the United States will see Gotham’s fourth season start on September 21st.
