Futuristic horror/war short film The Promised Land has been launched on Indiegogo and the filmmakers need you to help get the film made.

The Promised Land is a short film from London Film School student Johan Eskew and Produced by UK Filmmaker Scott Lyus, who directed the wonderful Silently Within Your Shadow, which played festivals all over the world to great acclaim. Taking a deep look into the worlds past and current issues of race and class, and set in a nightmarish future and ask the question of how far will we go if we let hate consume us, within a drama/horror/sci-fi epic.

Living in an America scarred by a civil war, Ross a 23-year-old Afro-Latin woman scavenges for food and supplies to take to her safe house, all while on the run from the Enforcers. Along the way, Ross is discovered by a young 11-year-old Caucasian girl, Lina, who is simply trying to get back home.

Looking out for herself, Ross attempts to distance herself from the young girl as she presents an immediate danger by association. In this world, Race does not mix. But leaving the girl behind is not an option and Ross soon finds herself on a journey to help Lina find her way home, all while trying to stay out of reach of the Enforcers.

On the project, producer Scott Lyus said: “We believe this is a story that needs telling, a look into a future we may be heading for. Produced in association with the London Film School, we plan on taking this short around the world and highlight the issues we’re all facing in today’s hate-filled landscape. Our Indiegogo campaign is now live. Please share and help support where you can. It really would mean the world to us.

SyFy Cancels DARK MATTER

While we’ve been a little spoilt with genre TV over the past few years, it now appears that it’s the end of the line for SyFy’s Dark Matter.

As per Deadline, the series has not been picked up for a fourth season. Following the third season finishing just a week or so ago, hopes were high that the show may be renewed for a further season, but that is now not to be the case.

Co-creator Joseph Mallozzi confirmed the outlet’s report by putting out a statement reading, “It is with great sadness that I confirm the news. SyFy has cancelled Dark Matter after three seasons. To say that I’m incredibly disappointed would be an understatement. I’ll save me comments and field your questions in a future blog entry. For today, I just want to extend a heartfelt thanks to my amazing crew, my wonderful cast, and to all of you, our incredible fans. You all deserved better.”

It was only last week that fans were rallying around the series in the hope of a fourth season being green-lit, but the network has ultimately decided against continuing with the show despite steady ratings.{jcomments on}

Warner Bros. Want DiCaprio for THE JOKER

Fresh off the news that Warner Brothers and DC are in the early stages of developing a Joker origin movie that seemingly nobody wants, now comes some more positive news on who may play the infamous Clown Prince of Crime.

Following the news of this Joker movie – which will be developed as an origin movie that exists outside of the DC Extended Universe – one of the more notable pieces of information was that Jared Leto wouldn’t be a part of the picture. While Leto would still be returning as the Jester of Genocide for Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens, a younger actor was being sought to play Batman’s longtime nemesis in said origin film. And now, it appears that Leonardo DiCaprio is the top choice for that particular gig.

Courtesy of Heat Vision, it’s being reported that DiCaprio is the man who Warners want for their next cinematic incarnation of Mr. J, although no offer has been made to the actor at this stage. While The Hangover’s Todd Phillips is on directing duties for the Joker film, more interesting here is that Martin Scorsese is set to sign on to produce. Scorsese, of course, has worked with DiCaprio on pictures such as Gangs of New York, The Departed, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street.

As mentioned, the original word was that The WB were looking for a younger actor to play the Joker in this movie. While DiCaprio is younger than Leto, there’s not that much in it; Leto is 45, DiCaprio is 42. If they could get Leo on board then it would certainly please many fans, and over the decades the talented DiCaprio has often been compared to a man who himself is no stranger to the Joker – Batman’s Jack Nicholson.

The current plan for this to-be-titled Harlequin of Hate effort is for it to be a “gritty hard-boiled crime film set in an early-‘80s Gotham City” with the feel of Scorsese’s iconic Taxi Driver.

So far, the response to this Joker movie happening hasn’t exactly been great, with barely a good word to be said about the concept. That said, the idea of Leonardo DiCaprio potentially playing the legendary Clown Prince of Crime is one that many could quite easily get on board with.

As ever, expect more on all of this as it continues to develop.

TRUE DETECTIVE Confirmed for Third Season

While it’s been pretty much universally known for the past few months now, HBO has finally moved to confirm that, yes, True Detective is indeed returning for a third season.

Furthermore, again matching previous reports and rumours, Moonlight and Marvel’s Luke Cage’s Mahershala Ali is set to headline this new season, with Nic Pizzolatto working on the story and script.

One piece of nice new information, though, is that Jeremy Saulnier has been brought in to direct. As well as helming Blue Ruin, Saulnier will be best known to genre fans for the fantastic neo Nazi-driven, Patrick Stewart and Anton Yelchin-starring Green Room.

Courtesy of Variety, the early word is that “the next installment tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”

Ali has landed the lead role of Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Arkansas.

Expect more on True Detective’s return as we get it.

Penelope Mitchell Joins the HELLBOY Reboot

Following Ed Skrein joining-then-departing the Hellboy reboot over this past week, the film has moved to add another familiar genre face to its ranks.

As per Deadline, The Vampire Diaries and Hemlock Grove’s Penelope Mitchell has landed the role of Ganeida in Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen. A character directly from the comic books, Ganeida is best described as an elder witch who looks to put an end to the antics of the nefarious Nimue/Blood Queen.

Mitchell joins a cast that currently features David Harbour as Hellboy, Ian McShane as Professor Broom, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, and Milla Jovovich as the villainous Blood Queen. The aforementioned Skrein had signed on as Major Ben Daimio just a week ago, although the actor then dropped out due to whitewashing fears after he realised that the comic-book Daimio is of Asian origin.

To be directed by The Descent’s Neil Marshall, Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is set to go in to production in September.

First Image of Misty Knight’s New Look for LUKE CAGE Season 2

With The Defenders now in the books, all eyes are on what lies ahead for Marvel’s small screen Netflix heroes. And on that front, we’ve been given our first look at how Misty Knight will appear in Season 2 of Marvel’s Luke Cage.

We’d like to think that you wouldn’t have clicked on this page unless you’ve already watched all eight episodes of The Defenders, and so if that’s the case then you know exactly how that miniseries ended for Misty Knight. Yes, this is our polite way of saying that there’s some spoilers ahead for those of you who’ve yet to watch Marvel’s latest Netflix-exclusive effort.

If you remember, as The Defenders came to a close we saw a hospital-bed-bound Misty sans an arm after losing the limb during the latter stages of the miniseries. While that may have been a shocking moment for some, comic book fans may have half been expecting that revelation to happen given that the comic-book Misty actually has a bionic arm given to her by Tony Stark. And now, courtesy of EW, the first image has been revealed of Simone Missick’s Misty rocking a bionic arm in Luke Cage’s second season.

Now while Marvel’s Netflix shows do take place within the confines of the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems more likely that it will be Danny Rand who helps Misty get her swanky new arm rather than Stark being behind it. After all, The Defenders saw Rand actually owning the hospital and offering to help Misty out with whatever she needed.

The second year of Marvel’s Luke Cage has yet to be given an official premiere date, but we know that Power Man and his cast of supporting characters will be back at some point in 2018. As well as Mike Colter back as Luke Cage and Simone Missick appearing as Misty Knight, Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple, Alfre Woodard’s Mariah Dillard, and Theo Rossi’s Shades will also be returning. In terms of new additions, so far the series has brought in The Deuce’s Mustafa Shakir as John McIver and Rosewood’s Gabrielle Dennis as Tilda Johnson.

TITANS Casts Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson

After the past month or so has seen the upcoming Titans cast Raven and Starfire, the series has now found the one so many of us have been waiting for: Dick Grayson.

As announced by DC Entertainment, Pirates of the Caribbean’s Brenton Thwaites has been brought in to play the iconic Dick. In the live-action Teen Titans show, it’s believed that Grayson will start as Robin before evolving to become Nightwing.

On this news, executive producer Geoff Johns enthused, “Dick Grayson is one of the most important and iconic heroes in the DC universe, and it wasn’t easy to find him but we have. Brenton has the emotional depth, heart, danger and physical presence of Batman’s former protégé and the Titans’ future leader. We’re extremely lucky he’s chosen to bring his talents to the project and this character.”

Comics-wise, Grayson, of course, is the longtime sidekick of Batman, the famed Boy Wonder known as Robin. From there, as he matured he went off to Bludhaven to become a hero in his own right: Nightwing. More impressive, at several times over the decades he’s actually stepped up to take over the cape and cowl of Batman. Even more noteworthy, though, Dick Grayson is one of the few comic book characters that everyone seems to universally love! Quite the achievement, no?

Already on board for Titans are Teagan Croft as Raven and Anna Diop as Starfire, a character who has been romantically tied to Dick over the years. As well as Johns, Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman and Sarah Schecter are developing the series.

The early word on Titans reads:

Titans follows a group of young soon-to-be Super Heroes recruited from every corner of the DC Universe. In this action-packed series, Dick Grayson emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes, including Starfire, Raven and many others. Titans is a dramatic, live-action adventure series that will explore and celebrate one of the most popular comic book teams ever.

As ever, expect more on Titans as it continues to develop.

Ed Skrein Departs HELLBOY Reboot

It was only last week that Deadpool’s Ed Skrein officially joined the upcoming Hellboy reboot – Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen – but the actor has now decided to depart the project already.

In an official statement, Skrein revealed that he’s decided to step away from the Major Ben Daimio gig after he realised that the character was of Asian heritage. Concerned that his casting may be seen as another example of Hollywood “whitewashing”, Skrein released the below statement:

“Last week it was announced that I would be playing Major Ben Daimio in the upcoming HELLBOY reboot. I accepted the role unaware that the character in the original comics was of mixed Asian heritage. There has been intense conversation and understandable upset since that announcement, and I must do what I feel is right.

It is clear that representing this character in a culturally accurate way holds significance for people, and that to neglect this responsibility would continue a worrying tendency to obscure ethnic minority stories and voices in the Arts. I feel it is important to honour and respect that. Therefore I have decided to step down so the role can be cast appropriately.

Representation of ethnic diversity is important, especially to me as I have a mixed heritage family. It is our responsibility to make moral decisions in difficult times and to give voice to inclusivity. It is my hope that one day these discussions will become less necessary and that we can help make equal representation in the Arts a reality.

I am sad to leave Hellboy but if this decision brings us closer to that day, it is worth it. I hope it makes a difference.”

From the studio’s point of view, Lionsgate added, “Ed came to us and felt very strongly about this. We fully support his unselfish decision.  It was not our intent to be insensitive to issues of authenticity and ethnicity, and we will look to recast the part with an actor more consistent with the character in the source material.”

With Rise of the Blood Queen set to start production in September, that means that Lionsgate and director Neil Marshall are now eagerly on the hunt for someone to step in and take over the Daimio role. Already on board for the reboot are David Harbour as Hellboy, Ian McShane as Professor Broom, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, and Milla Jovovich as the villainous Blood Queen.

As ever, expect more on this as it continues to develop.

Tobe Hooper 1943 – 2017

Tobe Hooper

STARBURST is deeply saddened to learn of that director Tobe Hooper has passed away aged 74.

Born in Austin, Texas in 1943, Hooper made a splash in the world of horror with his 1974 low-budget film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Despite being banned in several countries, the film is now considered a defining classic of the genre – and cinema, as a print is included in the permanent collection at the New York Museum of Modern Art – and helped the director gain bigger and more ambitious projects. In 1979, he helmed the two-part miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot to much praise. The Funhouse (1981) was a massive success, particularly on the burgeoning video market, despite being unsuccessfully prosecuted in the UK as a ‘video nasty’.

A collaboration with Steven Spielberg, who was unable to direct due to a clause in his contract for E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982), saw Hooper officially direct Poltergeist, although it’s heavily rumoured that the producer had more of a hand in helming the hit supernatural movie than Hooper.

Tobe returned to his most famous characters, Leatherface and his twisted family, in 1986 with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, which was much more graphic than the original and contained more dark comedy as well as the increased gore.

With a filmography that also included the likes of Lifeforce (1985), the remake of the ‘50s sci-fi classic Invaders from Mars (1986), several entries to anthology films and TV series and an updating of Toolbox Murders (2004), Tobe really made his mark with fans of the genre and will be deeply missed.

STARBURST send our thoughts and best wishes to his family and close friends.
