Finn Wolfhard Joins Upcoming Horror THE TURNING

Finn Wolfhard

One of the hottest young stars in Hollywood right now is Finn Wolfhard, and now comes word on the actor’s latest project.

As per Variety, Wolfhard – best known to genre fans for Stranger Things and IT – will be delving in to horror once more with The Turning. Based on Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw – itself already the subject of several adaptations – the story will centre on Mackenzie Davis as she becomes the nanny to a pair of orphans who just so happen to live in an eerie haunted house. Wolfhard will be playing one of the orphans in the adap.

If you remember back, The Turning was actually only weeks away from shooting last year before the project was put on hold. Back then, the film was known as Haunted and had Game of Thrones’ Rose Leslie and Marvel’s Luke Cage’s Alfre Woodard attached. It was actually producer Steven Spielberg’s decision to scrap the picture and essentially start from scratch with a new script and cast.

With The Runaways’ Floria Sigismondi on board to direct, The Turning is expected to start production early next year.

MR. ROBOT Renewed for Fourth Season

Mr. Robot

One of the most critically-acclaimed shows on the box these days is the fantastic Mr. Robot. With its third season having come to a close last night in the US, USA Network has moved to confirm that the series has indeed been renewed for a fourth season.

Creator Sam Esmail has similarly taken to social media to confirm that the writers’ room is already set up and ready to go for the new season.

Calm down everyone. #MrRobot season_4.0 writers’ room is officially open for business.

A post shared by Sam Esmail (@samesmail) on

Obviously, at this early juncture there’s not much known about what lies ahead for this fan favourite show, but here’s hoping that the new season manages to be just as impressive as the three seasons of Mr. Robot that we’ve had to date.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Eyeing DCEU Role

Jeffrey Dean Morgan

With Jeffrey Dean Morgan currently experiencing a huge boost in popularity thanks to his role as Negan in AMC’s The Walking Dead, many are eager to see more from the charismatic Morgan. And now, the actor himself has teased a possible role in the DC Extended Universe.

Of course, Morgan has already appeared in the DCEU, playing Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. That was only a small part, however, and his appearance was merely to once again showcase that night in Crime Alley in which Bruce Wayne’s parents are murdered. Elsewhere, JDM also has previous when it comes to comic-book movies, playing the Comedian in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen adaptation.

Fuelling the fires of possibility, speaking at New Jersey’s Walker Stalker Con – as reported by ComicBook.com – Morgan teased, “There’s a role in the DC Universe I’ve got my eye on.”

That was all that was said, and it’s sure to get fans talking about just which character Morgan could have in mind. One option, mind, could be that Jeffrey Dean Morgan will actually end up playing Batman. Let us explain…

With the solo movie for Ezra Miller’s Flash now titled Flashpoint, many have taken that as an indicator that the film could pull inspiration from Geoff Johns’ iconic Flashpoint comic-book arc. In that tale, Barry Allen goes back in time to save his mother, but his actions inadvertently change the present day as we know it. As well as Barry no longer having his superspeed, one of the biggest shockers about this new modern-day is that Bruce Wayne died that night in Crime Alley. Following that tragedy, Martha Wayne went crazy and became the Joker… and Thomas Wayne became an aggressive, heavy-drinking Batman. Some see a Flashpoint picture as a way for Warner Brothers to shake-up their problematic DC Extended Universe and right some of the plentiful wrongs of this shared realm.

So, if the Flashpoint movie does indeed pull plenty from the comic-book story of the same name, it could well be that we see Jeffrey Dean Morgan playing Batman in this altered timeline. Then again, Morgan may have a completely different DC hero or villain in mind. It’s worth keeping in mind, though, that he has previously talked about how he’d be more than happy to play the Flashpoint timeline’s Batman.

Make of this what you will, and, as ever, we’ll be sure to bring you more on this if and when anything further develops.

Familiar Face Confirmed For ARROW Return

Stephen Amell Green Arrow

We’d say to consider this a bit of a spoiler, but then The CW themselves have moved to announce the news. Yes, as the title suggests, a familiar old face will be returning to the fold over in the Star City corner of the network’s Arrowverse.

If you don’t want to know who’ll be back in the saddle, we’d advise turning back now. Then again, really, why would you even click on this story if you didn’t want to know the juicy details, right?

The big news is that Colton Haynes will be returning to Arrow as Roy Harper, a protégé of Oliver Queen’s who went under the moniker of Arsenal. The character was a main player of the fan favourite series up until he exited the series in the third season. That exit was a huge moment for the show, with Roy pretending to be the Arrow and then faking his own death. Since then, he made a one-off return in Season 4 but has not been seen on screen since.

Colton Haynes Arsenal

On this return, executive producers Marc Guggenheim and Wendy Mericle enthused, “We’re thrilled to announce that Colton Haynes will be reprising his role as Roy Harper for a short arc on Arrow this year. Roy is called back to Star City to help resolve an urgent matter with high stakes for the team. His short visit turns into something surprising when he reunites with Thea and sparks a chance in both of their lives that will have long-lasting consequences.”

Arrow’s mid-season finale is due to air on Sky1 tonight here in the UK, and the show will return to screens in January. While Roy’s return to Star City is more than just a one-off this time, it still doesn’t seem that he’ll be fully returning to become a regular part of the show once more.

It’s Official! Disney Purchases 21st Century Fox

Deadpool

It’s been a month or two since we first heard rumblings of Disney purchasing certain parts of 21st Century Fox, and it was only earlier this week that we reported a deal between the two juggernauts was close. Well, now it’s official!

To get to the meat of the matter, The Walt Disney Company has purchased a huge, huge chunk of 21st Century Fox – which basically means the film and TV elements of Fox. To be specific, the deal includes 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Fox 2000, 20th Century Fox Television, FX Productions, Fox21, FX Networks, National Geographic Partners, Fox Networks Group International, Star India, Fox Sports Regional Networks, and Fox’s ties in Hulu, Endemol Shine Group, and Sky.

The purchase is believed to have cost Disney around $52 billion, dwarfing the $4 billion paid for each of Marvel and Lucasfilm, not to mention the $7.4 billion it cost to nab Pixar.

Notable movie properties that will now be under the House of Mouse include Fox’s Marvel characters – as in the X-Men, Deadpool and the Fantastic Four – the Avatar franchise, the Alien series, the Kingsman movies, and the beloved Planet of the Apes saga. Then there’s the TV element, which includes huge shows such as The Simpsons, Family Guy and The X-Files.

With Disney in the midst of developing their own on-demand streaming service, expanding their catalogue with such properties should instantly position them as a serious rival to the likes of Netflix and Amazon.

For the official word on this deal, be sure to check out the detailed press release below:

The Walt Disney Company and Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc. today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement for Disney to acquire 21st Century Fox, including the Twentieth Century Fox Film and Television studios, along with cable and international TV businesses, for approximately $52.4 billion in stock (subject to adjustment). Building on Disney’s commitment to deliver the highest quality branded entertainment, the acquisition of these complementary assets would allow Disney to create more appealing content, build more direct relationships with consumers around the world and deliver a more compelling entertainment experience to consumers wherever and however they choose. Immediately prior to the acquisition, 21st Century Fox will separate the Fox Broadcasting network and stations, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, FS1, FS2 and Big Ten Network into a newly listed company that will be spun off to its shareholders.

Under the terms of the agreement, shareholders of 21st Century Fox will receive 0.2745 Disney shares for each 21st Century Fox share they hold (subject to adjustment for certain tax liabilities as described below). The exchange ratio was set based on a 30-day volume weighted average price of Disney stock. Disney will also assume approximately $13.7 billion of net debt of 21st Century Fox. The acquisition price implies a total equity value of approximately $52.4 billion and a total transaction value of approximately $66.1 billion (in each case based on the stated exchange ratio assuming no adjustment) for the business to be acquired by Disney, which includes consolidated assets along with a number of equity investments.

Popular Entertainment Properties to Join Disney Family

Combining with Disney are 21st Century Fox’s critically acclaimed film production businesses, including Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures and Fox 2000, which together offer diverse and compelling storytelling businesses and are the homes of Avatar, X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool, as well as The Grand Budapest Hotel, Hidden Figures, Gone Girl, The Shape of Water and The Martian—and its storied television creative units, Twentieth Century Fox Television, FX Productions and Fox21, which have brought The Americans, This Is Us, Modern Family, The Simpsons and so many more hit TV series to viewers across the globe. Disney will also acquire FX Networks, National Geographic Partners, Fox Sports Regional Networks, Fox Networks Group International, Star India and Fox’s interests in Hulu, Sky plc, Tata Sky and Endemol Shine Group.

“The acquisition of this stellar collection of businesses from 21st Century Fox reflects the increasing consumer demand for a rich diversity of entertainment experiences that are more compelling, accessible and convenient than ever before,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “We’re honored and grateful that Rupert Murdoch has entrusted us with the future of businesses he spent a lifetime building, and we’re excited about this extraordinary opportunity to significantly increase our portfolio of well-loved franchises and branded content to greatly enhance our growing direct-to-consumer offerings. The deal will also substantially expand our international reach, allowing us to offer world-class storytelling and innovative distribution platforms to more consumers in key markets around the world.”

“We are extremely proud of all that we have built at 21st Century Fox, and I firmly believe that this combination with Disney will unlock even more value for shareholders as the new Disney continues to set the pace in what is an exciting and dynamic industry,” said Rupert Murdoch, Executive Chairman of 21st Century Fox. “Furthermore, I’m convinced that this combination, under Bob Iger’s leadership, will be one of the greatest companies in the world. I’m grateful and encouraged that Bob has agreed to stay on, and is committed to succeeding with a combined team that is second to none.”

At the request of both 21st Century Fox and the Disney Board of Directors, Mr. Iger has agreed to continue as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company through the end of calendar year 2021.

“When considering this strategic acquisition, it was important to the Board that Bob remain as Chairman and CEO through 2021 to provide the vision and proven leadership required to successfully complete and integrate such a massive, complex undertaking,” said Orin C. Smith, Lead Independent Director of the Disney Board. “We share the belief of our counterparts at 21st Century Fox that extending his tenure is in the best interests of our company and our shareholders, and will be critical to Disney’s ability to effectively drive long-term value from this extraordinary acquisition.”

Benefits to Consumers

The acquisition will enable Disney to accelerate its use of innovative technologies, including its BAMTECH platform, to create more ways for its storytellers to entertain and connect directly with audiences while providing more choices for how they consume content. The complementary offerings of each company enhance Disney’s development of films, television programming and related products to provide consumers with a more enjoyable and immersive entertainment experience.

Bringing on board 21st Century Fox’s entertainment content and capabilities, along with its broad international footprint and a world-class team of managers and storytellers, will allow Disney to further its efforts to provide a more compelling entertainment experience through its direct-to-consumer (DTC) offerings. This transaction will enable Disney’s recently announced Disney and ESPN-branded DTC offerings, as well as Hulu, to create more appealing and engaging experiences, delivering content, entertainment and sports to consumers around the world wherever and however they want to enjoy it.

The agreement also provides Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool with the Marvel family under one roof and create richer, more complex worlds of inter-related characters and stories that audiences have shown they love. The addition of Avatar to its family of films also promises expanded opportunities for consumers to watch and experience storytelling within these extraordinary fantasy worlds. Already, guests at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort can experience the magic of Pandora—The World of Avatar, a new land inspired by the Fox film franchise that opened earlier this year. And through the incredible storytelling of National Geographic—whose mission is to explore and protect our planet and inspire new generations through education initiatives and resources—Disney will be able to offer more ways than ever before to bring kids and families the world and all that is in it.

Enhancing Disney’s Worldwide Offerings

Adding 21st Century Fox’s premier international properties enhances Disney’s position as a truly global entertainment company with authentic local production and consumer services across high-growth regions, including a richer array of local, national and global sporting events that ESPN can make available to fans around the world. The transaction boosts Disney’s international revenue mix and exposure.

Disney’s international reach would greatly expand through the addition of Sky, which serves nearly 23 million households in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Italy; Fox Networks International, with more than 350 channels in 170 countries; and Star India, which operates 69 channels reaching 720 million viewers a month across India and more than 100 other countries.

Prior to the close of the transaction, it is anticipated that 21st Century Fox will seek to complete its planned acquisition of the 61% of Sky it doesn’t already own. Sky is one of Europe’s most successful pay television and creative enterprises with innovative and high-quality direct-to-consumer platforms, resonant brands and a strong and respected leadership team. 21st Century Fox remains fully committed to completing the current Sky offer and anticipates that, subject to the necessary regulatory consents, the transaction will close by June 30, 2018. Assuming 21st Century Fox completes its acquisition of Sky prior to closing of the transaction, The Walt Disney Company would assume full ownership of Sky, including the assumption of its outstanding debt, upon closing.

Transaction Highlights

The acquisition is expected to yield at least $2 billion in cost savings from efficiencies realized through the combination of businesses, and to be accretive to earnings before the impact of purchase accounting for the second fiscal year after the close of the transaction.

Terms of the transaction call for Disney to issue approximately 515 million new shares to 21st Century Fox shareholders, representing approximately a 25% stake in Disney on a pro forma basis. The per share consideration is subject to adjustment for certain tax liabilities arising from the spinoff and other transactions related to the acquisition. The initial exchange ratio of 0.2745 Disney shares for each 21st Century Fox share was set based on an estimate of such tax liabilities to be covered by an $8.5 billion cash dividend to 21st Century Fox from the company to be spun off. The exchange ratio will be adjusted immediately prior to closing of the acquisition based on an updated estimate of such tax liabilities. Such adjustment could increase or decrease the exchange ratio, depending upon whether the final estimate is lower or higher, respectively, than the initial estimate. However, if the final estimate of the tax liabilities is lower than the initial estimate, the first $2 billion of that adjustment will instead be made by net reduction in the amount of the cash dividend to 21st Century Fox from the company to be spun off. The amount of such tax liabilities will depend upon several factors, including tax rates in effect at the time of closing as well as the value of the company to be spun off.

The Boards of Directors of Disney and 21st Century Fox have approved the transaction, which is subject to shareholder approval by 21st Century Fox and Disney shareholders, clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, a number of other non-United States merger and other regulatory reviews, and other customary closing conditions.

LORD OF TEARS Director Announces New UK Genre Film Studio

hex studio

We’re always proud when filmmakers who we’ve had a close relationship expand and go onto greater things, so we’re really excited that Lawrie Brewster (director of some of our favourite indie horror films of the past few years) has announced the formation of new genre movie studio – just what the UK film industry needs!

The full press release is below, and we at STARBURST are all looking forward to seeing what they come up with!

Hex Media, the outfit behind Lord of Tears, The Unkindness of Ravens and The Black Gloves, today announced they are to establish Hex Studios, the UK’s only dedicated genre studio, committed to developing, producing and distributing horror and fantasy content, with a focus on bold, original storytelling, and nurturing diverse voices in the genre.

Having acquired a historic Gothic revival church in Fife, Scotland as their base, Hex plan to develop both a studio company and production space which will house a green screen studio, sound recording facilities and special effects workshop, as well as serving as a hub for the genre with regular events and screenings.

First on the Hex Studios slate is horror anthology For We Are Many, featuring segments from up-and-coming filmmakers from around the world. The feature-length film is to star horror legends Eileen Dietz (The Exorcist) and Laurence Harvey (The Human Centipede II) with many more to be announced.

Legendary filmmaker Roger Corman, a supporter of the new venture, said today: “Hex Studios is an ambitious new project which aims to rekindle the spirit of classic horror cinema, and gives me hope for the future of original, independent filmmaking.”

Hex Studios is the brainchild of Hex Media founder and producer/director Lawrie Brewster who will head the project along with partner Sarah Daly and co-founders Richard Pate, Nick Ford and Bill Eikost.

According to Lawrie Brewster, “Hex Studios is inspired by the glory days of Hammer Horror at Bray Studios. It’s more than just a physical production space or a studio company, it’s a grass-roots movement that seeks to pursue a revolutionary approach to the art and business of filmmaking.”

Hex Media partner, writer/producer Sarah Daly added: “We want to foster a resurgence in the great British tradition of horror filmmaking, as well as providing opportunities for aspiring writers, actors and filmmakers in Scotland and all over the world.”

GOOSEBUMPS Sequel Lands a Director

Goosebumps HorrorLand

We’ve known for a little while that Sony Pictures had plans for a sequel to 2015’s Goosebumps, and now comes word on who’ll direct the follow-up.

As per Tracking Board, The Duff’s Ari Sandel has signed on to helm Goosebumps 2. Previously, there were reports that Sony had two scripts being worked on; one which would bring back Jack Black as R.L. Stine, one which wouldn’t see Black returning to the fold.

Plot-wise, some rumblings had the sequel pegged to focus on the much-loved HorrorLand. It’s also believed that Sony is looking to work on a lesser budget this time out.

At this stage, Goosebumps 2 is booked in for a September 21st, 2018 release.

Guillermo del Toro to Helm NIGHTMARE ALLEY Remake

Guillermo del Toro

It seems that Guillermo del Toro is always spinning countless plates at any one time, and now another new venture has been confirmed for the hugely popular genre favourite.

With The Shape of Water now out in the US – to be released in February here in the UK – Variety has revealed that del Toro has signed on for Fox Searchlight’s Nightmare Alley remake. The ridiculously talented del Toro will co-write the screenplay with Kim Morgan before then directing the film.

The original Nightmare Alley was released back in 1947, with the Tyrone Power-headlined tale centred on a young con-man who ends up meeting a female psychiatrist who is even more dodgy than he is. From there, the duo at first have some success in teaming together, but it doesn’t take long before the psychiatrist starts to out-manipulate the cocksure fella.

Two More Join SHAZAM!

Ian Chen and Jovan Armand Shazam!

As Shazam! continues to flesh out its cast, two new additions have been brought in to the David F. Sandberg-helmed effort.

Courtesy of Deadline, Fresh Off the Boat’s Ian Chen and Bella and the Bulldogs’ Jovan Armand have been brought in to play Eugene and Pedro, two pals of young Billy Batson. The duo join a picture that has Zachary Levi as Shazam, Asher Angel as Billy Batson, and Jack Dylan Grazer and Grace Fulton as some others friends of Billy’s. Kingsman’s Mark Strong is in talks to play the villain of the piece, Doctor Sivana.

For those not familiar with the superhero Shazam – formerly known as Captain Marvel – the early synopsis for the film should get you up to speed on the basics:

Based on the DC Comics character Shazam, Billy Batson becomes Captain Marvel, the world’s mightiest mortal, when he says the magic word “Shazam!” The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes. The wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, stamina of Atlas, power of Zeus, courage of Achilles and speed of Mercury.

Despite Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation’s Sandberg horror heavy past, the current plan is for Shazam! to be a bright, uplifting entry in the DC Extended Universe.

With an April 2019 release date planned, Shazam! will get rolling early next year.
