Grab Your FREE Ticket to the STARBURST Media City Festival

festival

We’re proud to announce that the STARBURST Media City Festival will take place this March at The Landing at MediaCityUK- and even more delighted to say, the tickets are FREE!

We have teamed up with the folks at The Landing to host the first-ever film festival at MediaCityUK, and have put together a line-up of classic films and new, independent movies and shorts to highlight the venue and celebrate the 40th Anniversary of STARBURST. The event takes place on March 16th and 17th and promises to be legendary.

The classic films being screened are a strong mix of seminal sci-fi and horror as well as crowd-pleasing gems. Titles include Gattaca (1997), Silent Running (1972), Event Horizon (1997), Altered States (1980), Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988), The Humanoid (1979), Hounds of Love (2016), and The Greasy Strangler (2016). The full list of titles can be found on the STARBURST Media City Festival website.

We will also be supporting up and coming talent with a selection of independent films, which will culminate in the STARBURST Fantasy Awards on the Saturday evening, before we party the night away. Titles already selected include feature films The Gatehouse and The House of Screaming Death and short films including Connie, Search/Destroy: A Strontium Dog Fan Film, The Stay, Bragging Rights! and much more. The next wave of selections will be announced very soon.

We’re keen to celebrate film as much as possible but this isn’t a ‘convention’. However, we will have a number of guests joining us, including the director of the notorious film Nekromantik, Jörg Buttgereit.

After the roaring success of our inaugural Film Festival in 2016, we’ve revamped our approach, changed the venue (for the better – wait until you see how spectacular The Landing is!) and decided for the first year, the STARBURST Media City Festival should be available to everyone, hence no ticket prices! STARBURST Editor Jordan Royce said: “40 years is a big deal for us at STARBURST Magazine, and we also want to celebrate the arrival at our new home. MediaCityUK is the perfect location, and The Landing at MediaCityUK is the perfect venue to bring you our annual celebration of genre”.

Don’t delay – tickets are limited and free. Head over to Eventbrite to secure yours now.

New Poster and Portraits Released for THE OWLMAN: CHAPTER 2

Owlman 2

Hex Studios has released a new poster and some portraits for The Owlman: Chapter 2 (also known as The Black Gloves), which was directed by Lawrie Brewster following a successful crowdfunding campaign. The film is a sequel to the fantastically atmospheric Lord of Tears.

From the press release:

Ahead of the release of the 1940s-set chiller, Hex Studios has also shared a series of portraits, giving fans a glimpse of the film’s cast of characters.

Shot on a vintage film camera, the images capture the dread-filled atmosphere that fans of Hex Studios will instantly recognise.

Written by Sarah Daly, The Owlman: Chapter 2 tells the story of a psychologist obsessed with the disappearance of his young patient, and the menacing owl-headed figure that plagued her nightmares. His investigations lead him to a reclusive ballerina who, just like his patient, is convinced that she is about to die at the hands of this disturbing entity.

The film stars Macarena Gómez (Shrew’s Nest, Dagon) and Nicholas Vince (Hellraiser, Nightbreed), as well as Hex Studios favourites Alexandra Nicole Hulme and Jamie Scott-Gordon.

According to Brewster, “the film is a brooding, atmospheric chiller with a dark mystery at its core, filled with twisted revelations and infused with a creeping dread.”

The Owlman: Chapter 2 is an international co-production between Hex Studios and Dark Dunes Productions in association with producers Richard Pate and Nick Ford, 3rd Monkey Productions, 7 Toes Productions, Needle’s Eye Productions and Lights Out Productions.

BATTLEFLEET GOTHIC: ARMADA II Announced

Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2

Following up on their success with the original game, Focus Home Interactive have announced the release of 2016’s Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2. Skipping forward in the timeline, the game will not focus on some of the later conflicts following the Twelfth Black Crusade or Tyrannic Wars, but will instead be set in the era following Cadia’s destruction.

The trailer is purely cinematic and shows little in the way of gameplay alterations, but it has confirmed a multitude of points. There are set to be twelve factions this time around, with new elements including the Adeptus Mechanicus, Dark Eldar, Robute Guilliman’s Indomitus Crusade, the Necron Dynasties and Tyranid Hive Fleets. It has also been announced that all previous factions will return in one form or another.

In the game’s section on Focus Home Interactive’s website, the publisher promised the following:

“The latest dramatic story development in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, the Gathering Storm and the 13th Black Crusade, will serve as the canvas for several, extensive and dynamic campaigns. With bigger battles, refined gameplay, improved multiplayer modes and features for a better and more balanced online experience, improvements across the board and even more customisation options for fleets and ships, Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 promises to be the ultimate Warhammer 40,000 space battle experience.”

Going from the improved multiplayer modes and refined gameplay, it seems that the developer has been listening to the common criticisms of the previous release. Time will tell if they have truly acted upon them.

Leaked Documents Suggest Terrifying Alternative to Lootboxes

Over the past several years, major AAA industries have been criticised for an increasingly heavy focus upon microtransactions and loot boxes. While the actual system itself has been about for well over a decade, following the success of Overwatch we have seen more and more games prioritizing their use. Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and Lord of the Rings: Shadow of War are two of the more infamous titles within the last few years to take this to an extreme. Others such as Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands are looking to tack them on in future updates. The constant rise has led to considerable backlash from gamers, and the system is being increasingly criticised for addictive elements akin to those found in slot machines.

The fact that loot boxes are appearing in every game possible and are being tacked on purely because big budget developers can add them in is a troubling trend. Unfortunately, leaked documents suggest that what might end up replacing it is a far, far worse scheme.

Slides for an upcoming presentation by Data Broker LLC were leaked onto Imgur.com via a dead man’s switch. The presentation itself was intended to focus upon the issues behind current monetization models and highlights many of the flaws within loot boxes. The opening slides cover the problems of the loot box system, such as relying upon a handful of gambling addicts to support the system while drawing the ire of a larger audience. Unfortunately, rather than ending there, it goes on to promote the idea of a new AI monetization scheme as a likely replacement. One which, as the presentation shows, is highly intrusive and relies upon constantly spying on its customers.

While the full presentation should be looked at in detail by anyone concerned about this subject, several of the more notable slides are as follows – click the images for larger versions:

The first being its major three points, highlighting how the system should use social engineering and psychological manipulation tactics to push customers into spending more:

Another being the use of customer locations and personal data to assist with the AI’s methods of targeting them:

3D mapping the homes of potential customers through existing technology:

How the AI can and will utilise player frustrations within games to push for further payments:

And finally, how the AI can “fortunately” sidestep laws assisting with the protecting of children from gambling and emotional manipulation:

What needs to be remembered is that this is simply a leaked document. As such it needs to be taken with a pinch of salt and should only be thought of as an allegation until the public gains further confirmations of this subject. With that being said, this wouldn’t be the first time the industry has attempted to push this exact sort of thing. Several key pointers show a disturbing similarity to the highly criticised concepts promoted by Microsoft in the 2013 Xbox One reveal, which includes scanning an environment to gather information on a customer and tracking their activities. Combined with statements made by Take-Two Interactive surrounding microtransactions, and seemingly caring for little beyond how much cash they earn, it’s not implausible to think that some attempt will be made to implement a system similar to this AI.

Angela Sarafyan Joins Zac Efron’s Ted Bundy Movie

Angela Sarafyan

With Zac Efron’s Ted Bundy movie continuing to flesh-out its cast, the film has moved to bring in Angela Sarafyan.

As per Deadline, the Westworld actress will play Joanna in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. That character is described as a pal of Lily Collins’ Elizabeth who “acts as a support system for Elizabeth and is the reason she finally questions Bundy’s intentions.”

With Efron playing the infamous Bundy in the upcoming indie effort, the film will actually be told from the point of view of Elizabeth Kloepfer; the partner of Bundy who spent years denying any and all of the accusations made against her boyfriend. Eventually, she’d turn him in to the police, and it would only be as Bundy’s execution loomed large that she and the rest of the world found out the true grim details of just how much misery and torment he caused to so many. As well as Efron, Collins and Sarafyan on board, John Malkovich is also signed on to play Edward Cowart, the Judge tasked with handling the case back in 1979.

Metallica: Some Kind of Monster’s Joe Berlinger is on directing duties, with Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile yet to be given a set release date.

Ursula Le Guin 1929 – 2018

Ursula Le Guin

Grand Master of Science Fiction and Fantasy, Ursula Le Guin passed away Monday, January 22nd. She was one of the most influential authors in the industry, with her works such as The Left Hand of Darkness and The Wizard of Earthsea shaping the industry. Tributes have been pouring in via social media from the likes of Laurie Penny,  Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Guy Gavriel Kay and John Scalzi.

She was a Hugo Award nominee 23 times and won five of the prestigious awards in addition to winning six Nebula Awards. Several of her works, including The Left Hand of Darkness, Orsinian Tales and Dispossessed have been collected into Library of America. This means that her works will never be out of print.

She was first published in 1964, with a story that would begin The Wizard of Earthsea story. These tales would be (partially) adapted into the Studio Ghibli film Tales from Earthsea. Various examples of her work, including both her fantasy and science fiction, have been adapted for the stage, and a TV series based on The Left Hand of Darkness is currently in production.

Le Guin was a remarkable and unique voice in the community. A scholar, philosopher, critic, activist and social commentator. She will be profoundly missed by us all.

BLACK WIDOW Movie Eyeing 2020 Release

Black Widow

The end of last year saw it finally revealed that we will be getting that much-sought solo movie for Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow. And now, we seemingly have an update on when said film will make its way to the silver screen.

As per The Daily Mail – we know, we can’t stand the publication either – it appears that a 2020 release is the current plan for Widow’s solo outing. The “outlet” states that Johansson has agreed a $25 million fee to star in the picture, and Jude Law and Ben Mendelsohn are being considered to also appear in the film. Both Law and Mendelsohn are set to make their Marvel Cinematic Universe debuts in March 2019’s Brie Larson-starring Captain Marvel.

Law is playing the original Captain Marvel – Walter Lawson, aka Mar-Vell – in that Larson-headlined feature, while Mendelsohn is playing the villain of the piece, believed to be the leader of the Skrulls. The fact that these two characters could appear in Black Widow as well as Captain Marvel does seem a little far-fetched. After all, Captain Marvel takes place in the ‘90s and will have a far more galactic, space-driven theme to it than anything we could possibly imagine for Widow at this point. Could it be that the ever-reliable (ha!) Daily Mail has their wires crossed over Marvel Studios’ upcoming two female-headlined movies?

What we do know is that Black Widow is definitely happening, with Jac Schaeffer currently penning the script. As for a 2020 release date, that seems like it could well be doable – especially as there are May 2020, August 2020 and November 2020 release dates booked in for mystery MCU movies.

Still, take plenty of the above with a pinch of salt because… well, because The Daily Mail.

As ever, we’ll bring you more on all things Black Widow as that film continues to develop.

Showrunner Departs TNT’s SNOWPIERCER

Snowpiercer

In a major blow for TNT’s upcoming Snowpiercer series, showrunner Josh Friedman has departed the project.

As per Variety, Friedman has left Snowpiercer over creative differences. In addition to serving as showrunner, Friedman was also the main writing force behind the show. At this stage, no replacement has been announced.

If you’ve not been keeping tabs on this one, quite the impressive cast has been amassed, including Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly, Grammy winner Daveed Diggs, and other notable names such as Benjamin Haigh, Katie McGuinness, Roberto Urbina, Susan Park, Sasha Frolova, Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, and Lena Hall.

Snowpiercer began life as a Jacques Lob and Jeam-Marc Rochette graphic novel before being turned in to a 2013 movie starring Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Song Kang-ho, John Hurt, Ed Harris, and Octavia Spencer. The futuristic tale is set seven years after the world has been turned in to a frozen wasteland, with the remaining survivors of humanity taking refuge on a perpetually moving train that circles this icy landscape. Of course, with a mixed bag of various survivors, it’s not long before familiar social themes such as class divides, social prejudice and politics come to the fore.

Where TNT’s small screen version is concerned, Sinister and Doctor Strange’s Scott Derrickson has directed the pilot and will executive produce the series.

New ROBOCOP Movie in Early Development?

RoboCop

Well, this is a little out of left field, but another RoboCop movie is seemingly in the early stages of development.

Screenwriter Ed Neumeier – who worked on the script for both the 1987 original and the 2014 remake – has revealed that he’s currently working on yet another outing for Murphy.

As Neumeier told Zeitgeist, “It’s nice that people are still interested in RoboCop, and they have me working on a new one at MGM right now so maybe we’ll get another one out. We’re not supposed to say too much. There’s been a bunch of other RoboCop movies and there was recently a remake and I would say this would be kind of going back to the old RoboCop we all love, and starting there and going forward. So it’s a continuation really of the first movie, in my mind. So it’s a little bit more of the old school things.”

Make of this what you will, and this is certainly something we’ve got our eye on.

As ever, expect more on all things RoboCop if and when things continue to develop further.
