TV Take on NIGHTBREED in Deveopment

Nightbreed

With horror TV a huge deal these days, now comes word that Clive Barker’s Nightbreed is getting the small-screen treatment.

Courtesy of Deadline, it’s been revealed that a Nightbreed series is being developed for Syfy. Barker himself will be involved in the project, and he’ll be working with Morgan Creek Entertainment, and Jigsaw writer Josh Stolberg.

The show will be based on Barker’s Cabal source material, with the greater premise exploring race relations across America. The story sees an underground group of human-mutant hybrids looking to find refuge in a gone-to-the-dogs world. At the centre of this is the recently anointed new reluctant hero of the group, who is having to deal with the responsibilities now placed upon him and with the mystery surrounding the death of his fiancée.

On this news, Morgan Creek’s David Robinson enthused, “There has never been a more relevant time for us to turn to one of the genre’s great cult classics from our movie library to impact the national conversation with bold, compelling and unconventional storytelling. The team at Morgan Creek is very excited to partner with Clive Barker, Syfy and Universal Cable Production on Nightbreed for a unique, trenchant and no-holds-barred exploration of race relations in today’s society. As a sophisticated twist on the classic graphic novel form, Nightbreed pits ‘Humans’ against persecuted monsters, using metaphor and parable to take on bias and prejudice with real-world consequences.”

As ever, expect more on Nightbreed as it continues to develop. And yes, we also had to look up the term “trenchant”, too.

SILK Movie in Development at Sony

Silk Spider-Man

Here’s another one to add to Sony’s shared Spider-Verse…

Yes, as the headline suggests, fan favourite Silk is to get her own movie.

As per The Wrap, Sony is now developing just such a picture, with Amy Pascal set to produce the effort. Despite the Silver Sable and Black Cat team-up – Silver & Black – having recently been put on indefinite hold, plans are still afoot to expand the shared realm that Sony will kick off with this October’s Tom Hardy-headlined Venom.

For those not familiar with the Silk character, Cindy Moon is an American-Korean classmate of Peter Parker’s who just so happened to be bitten by the very same radioactive spider that had a nibble at Peter and gave him his powers. Cindy would actually develop the same powers as Parker, although she wouldn’t make herself known to him until thirteen years down the line.

The character was created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, debuting in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man Vol.3 #1. Since then, Cindy Moon has gone on to become a hugely popular figure amongst Marvel Comics fans.

As alluded to, Venom will launch a new shared universe of films based around Spider-Man-driven characters. Right now, the vampiric Michael Morbius is being lined up for his own solo movie, Spike Lee has been eying a movie based around tech-driven hero Nightwatch, and then there’s Silver & Black still technically in development, just on hold right now. Elsewhere, there’s also the animated Into the Spider-Verse picture on the way this December, with the Miles Morales version of Spider-Man to take centre-stage in that effort.

Expect more on Silk and all of these projects as they continue to develop.

Title Revealed for SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Sequel

Spider-Man Tom Holland

*Thwip*

After plenty of speculation, the upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming has been given an official title.

It was left to ol’ Web-head himself to break the news, with star Tom Holland taking to his Instagram page to reveal the title:

Sorry for no announcements, but I love you guys ♥️

So, Spider-Man: Far From Home it is!

Given how the follow-up is said to take place in Europe, the Far From Home subtitle is certainly a good fit.

Of course, things didn’t go all that well for Spidey by the time that Avengers: Infinity War came to a close, so it remains to be seen just how the famed Wall-crawler will swing back in to action. Expect that to all be explained when the Infinity War follow-up hits the silver screen next May.

For Spider-Man: Far From Home, what we know so far is that Jake Gyllenhaal has recently signed on to play the nefarious Mysterio. On the villain front, Michael Keaton will be back as Adrian Toomes, too, and it could well be that Michael Mando may reprise his Mac Gargan role. Mando had a small supporting role in Homecoming, and comic book fans will be well aware that Gargan is better known as the villainous Scorpion. With Far From Home potentially featuring Mysterio, Vulture, and Scorpion, many are predicting that we could see the early foundations being laid for the Sinister Six team; a team of six supervillains who come together to finally wipe out Spider-Man once and for all.

Spider-Man: Far From Home will see Homecoming’s Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers penning the screenplay, with Homecoming director Jon Watts another returning.

At this point, Spider-Man: Far From Home is set for a July 2019 release.

STAR WARS Spin-Off Films NOT on Hold?

Boba Fett Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars

Earlier this week, we reported that Lucasfilm had put their Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett-driven pictures on hold following the poor performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Well, now comes word that that is apparently not the case.

Several outlets broke the news of those movies being put on hold for now, with the poor box office performance of Solo being the reason. Here at Moonbase Alpha, we massively enjoyed Solo, yet the take-home so far has been massively disappointing for Lucasfilm and Disney. To give you an idea on the figures, Solo has taken $340 million globally by this stage, with the film costing a reported $275 million to make. Then you add in an estimated $100 million or more in marketing costs, and you can see why many are labelling the picture as a dud in financial terms.

After the news of the Kenobi and Fett outings being put on hold broke, it was believed that it was actually a Disney call rather than a Lucasfilm call. Similarly, it’s believed that Disney were the  ones pushing for Solo to get released this May; just a matter of months after the mixed reaction to The Last Jedi.

Now, ABC News – who actually share a parent company with Lucasfilm – is reporting that spin-off films such as the Obi-Wan and Boba ones have not been put on hold. They add that multiple Star Wars efforts are in development, and that some of these haven’t even been announced yet.

We guess it’s down to you to make your own mind up on all of this, but we can’t help but think that the poor return and mixed response to Solo: A Star Wars Story won’t have some sort of bearing on Disney and Lucasfilm’s plans going forward.

Right now, as well as next year’s Episode IX, Rian Johnson is developing a new trilogy of films and Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are similarly working on some new Star Wars movies. If you take Stephen Daldry’s Obi-Wan-Kenobi picture and James Mangold’s Boba Fett effort in to account, then that’s a whole lotta Wars action on the horizon. Is it too much? That’s up to you to decide. Certainly, some people are citing over-saturation as an issue right now, but then on the flipside of that are those fans who would happily see as much Star Wars action as possible.

As ever, expect more on all things Star Wars – both on the big and small screen – as we get it.

Scoot McNairy Boards QT’s ONCE UPON A TIME…

Scoot McNairy

With Quentin Tarantino assembling the core cast for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the iconic director has moved to add genre fave Scoot McNairy to the picture.

As per Deadline, the Monsters, Killing Them Softly, Argo, Frank, Gone Girl, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice actor has signed on play Business Bob Gilbert, a cowboy in a Western TV show within the movie.

For those unfamiliar with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, this ‘60s-set tale uses the infamous Manson Family murders as its anchor point. Like so many QT efforts, the cast assembled so far is quite frankly ludicrous. To give you an idea of the sort of cast we’re talking about, McNairy joins an ensemble that features Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, Burt Reynolds, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Timothy Olyphant, Emile Hirsch, Damian Lewis, Luke Perry, James Marsden, Dakota Fanning, Keith Jefferson, Clifton Collins Jr, and former live-action Spider-Man, Nicholas Hammond.

To be distributed by Sony Pictures, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is currently set for an August 2019 release.

IT: CHAPTER 2 Adds Xavier Dolan and Will Beinbrink

Xavier Dolan Will Beinbrink IT:: Chapter 2

With production now underway on IT: Chapter 2, the follow-up has moved to bring in two further names.

As per Deadline, I Killed My Mother’s director Xavier Dolan and Free State of Jones’ Will Beinbrink will be playing Adrian Mellon and Tom Rogan, respectively. Mellon is described as a gay man living in Derry who was bullied to the extent that he ultimately fell victim to Pennywise, while Rogan is the abusive partner of the adult Beverly.

By this point in the game, Chapter 2 has already assembled its adult Losers Club; Jessica Chastain playing Beverly, James McAvoy as Bill, James Ransone as Eddie, Bill Hader as Richie, Isaiah Mustafa as Mike, Andy Bean as Stanley, and Jay Ryan as Ben. And yes, Bill Skarsgard will be back as the sinister Pennywise.

IT: Chapter 2 will see the adult Losers Club return to Derry for one last battle with Pennywise, with the action picking up 27 years after the first picture.

To once again be directed by Andy Muschietti, IT: Chapter 2 is currently set for a September 2019 release.

THE WALKING DEAD to Undergo a Time Jump

The Walking Dead

For longtime fans of the comic-book The Walking Dead, this likely won’t come as a major surprise, but AMC’s TV take on the walker-centric property is to jump forward in time for its next season.

Speaking to Insider, new showrunner Angela Kang explained, “We’re working on a season that has a really fresh look and feel. We’re playing with time in this season, so we get to kind of jump forward in the story.”

The reason why this won’t come as a surprise for fans of the comics is down to the fact that the battle between Rick and Negan that played out during the finale of Season 8 then jumps forward by two years in the funny books. And so, it looks as if the TV show may pull a similar stunt.

It certainly appears that The Walking Dead is looking to change things up, with mainstays Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) and Lauren Cohan (Maggie Rhee) both set to depart the show during the impending ninth season. We now know, too, that we’ll be fast-forwarding down the timeline as well.

Chris Wood Not Returning for SUPERGIRL’s Fourth Season

Chris Wood Mon-El Supergirl

With Supergirl’s third season having now come to a close over in the US, it’s been revealed that Chris Wood won’t be returning as a series regular for the show’s already-confirmed fourth season.

In the Melissa Benoist-starrer, the charismatic Wood plays Mon-El. As has been revealed to TV Line, though, the plan was always to have Mon-El’s story play out over a two-season arc.

We guess we should give some sort of spoiler warning here, so be warned that we’re going to touch on the finale of Season 3 shortly.

SPOILERS

Still with us? Good! While we’ve yet to actually see said season finale here in the UK, the episode will see Mon-El sent forward in time once again.

Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Robert Royner explained, “The plan for Chris was always to have him on the show for two years. We’ve loved telling Mon-El’s story, as well as the story we’ve told for him and Kara. We hope the fans felt that it was a satisfying conclusion.”

Fellow executive producer Jessica Queller added, “They both have destinies in different times as heroes. What they did was the sort of Casablanca decision of putting what’s most important to them – which is saving the world – first. It’s a little bittersweet that one destiny is to be a hero in this time and one’s destiny is to run the Legion in another time, but I think they grew a lot from knowing one another.”

While Mon-El won’t be back for the fourth season, a return isn’t completely off the table given how the Arrowverse has made a habit of bringing characters back over the years. And given how Mon-El is a part of the Legion, time-travel is a tool instantly at his disposal.

Supergirl airs on Sky1 here in the UK.
