Looks like Doctor Who might very well celebrate its 50th Anniversary with a new incumbent in charge of the TARDIS.

Speaking to VH1 during his current visit to the USA, eleventh Doctor Matt Smith replied to the question of when he might take his acting socks across the Atlantic full-time, by saying “I’ve got another year of Doctor Who, but then I’m certainly going to come and give it a shot.” The implication being that here in the UK, we’ll only have Smith as the Doctor for one more year.

Of course, the filming schedules and broadcast plans (insofar as we know them) mean that the eleventh Doctor will still be appearing on our screens well into 2013 – filming is scheduled to commence on Series Seven in the New Year, and the thirteen episodes planned are due to be shown across the autumn of 2012 and into the following year – but unless those episodes are all that is planned for 2013 (which is extremely unlikely), it’s a certainty that it will be the twelfth Doctor inhabiting the TARDIS when the big day itself arrives on November the 23rd.

If what Smith is implying turns out to be true.
