Much loved science fiction novel ENDER’S GAME by Orson Scott Card has been on Hollywood’s to-do list for a while now. The closest it came to production was a few years back with TROY director Wolfgang Petersen directing. It all went quiet for a while until recently when it was announced that WOLVERINE director Gavin Hood would be the man to bring it to the screen. Now it seems this is more concrete as Summit Entertainment have announced a release date of March 15th 2013.

ENDERS GAME was first published in 1985 and tells the story of mankind in the future locked in a long war with the insectoid race the Formics. We follow the youngster Ender Wiggin who was taken at a very young age to a battle school run by the international fleet to be trained in the art of war in preparation for a predicted invasion. Ender is revealed to be something of a tactical genius and is thrust into the war effort. There were six follow-up novels and a recent comic book series.

Gavin Hood wrote the script himself and the film will be produced by screenwriting powerhouse duo Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (STAR TREK, TRANSFORMERS). With HARRY POTTER all over and TWILIGHT about to wrap up, studios are anxious to get a new tween friendly franchise in the multiplex. This sounds like it could be an entertaining mix between THE HUNGER GAMES and STARSHIP TROOPERS. Let’s hope that they don’t just see it as the next TWILIGHT, and that WOLVERINE was Hood on an off day.
