Even Danny Torrance didn’t see this one coming…

Following on from Stephen King’s surprising announcement that he’s currently nearing completion of a sequel to his seminal 1977 novel THE SHINING, comes news that Warner Bros. are beginning talks about a prequel.

Sadly there’s no other information beyond the fact that they’ve drafted in the help of writer/producer Laeta Kalogridis and his team Bradley Fischer & James Vanderbilt to help shepherd the project. Who they? Good question. Kalogridis’ many successes include notable genre fare such as the short-lived Batman spin-off BIRDS OF PREY, and a little movie you might have heard of called AVATAR, both of which he served as executive producer. He most recently penned SHUTTER ISLAND, and has several high profile movies in varies stages of development such as the long awaited BATTLE ANGEL, a remake of FANTASTIC VOYAGE, and a live action adaptation of anime classic GHOST IN THE SHELL. Fischer has produced the likes of BLACK SWAN and the aforementioned Martin Scorsese mental institution thriller, with THE UNPLEASANT PROFESSION OF JONATHAN HOAG, Neil Marshall’s THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER and ALTERED CARBON on the way. Ruffling feathers of fans is something that Vanderbilt is no doubt rapidly getting used to, as he is responsible for scripting both THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and ROBOCOP reboots.

So, healthy CVs all around, but whichever way they choice to take the prequel, we just can’t see this being greeted with anything other than disdain from fans of Kubrick’s horror masterpiece or King’s source.
