X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is set to hit screens next month, but that isn’t where 20th Century Fox’s Marvel cinematic property ends. Already confirmed are X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, a third solo outing for Wolverine, and Jeff Wadlow’s X-Force-based movie. Then there’s the rumours of a possible Channing Tatum-starring Gambit movie and that long-discussed Deadpool solo effort. Speaking to Collider, producer Simon Kinberg has been talking about an R-rated Deadpool movie and also the notion of expanding the X-world to the realm of TV.

On an adult-themed Deadpool movie, Kinberg said, “It makes sense. It’s early days, but if you’re gonna do a Deadpool movie, I think you’ve gotta do a hard-R, darker movie and he is the perfect character to do it with.”

Given the success of SMALLVILLE and now ARROW, along with the upcoming GOTHAM, THE FLASH and solo shows for Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron First, and Jessica Jones, Kinberg thinks that the X-Men’s world could find a home on the smaller screen. “We’re still in this place of figuring out what the future of the franchise will be,” he said, “but it makes sense to tell some of these stories in TV partly because there’s just not enough screens to do all these characters, and also because the serialised format of comic books is better suited for TV.”

Ever since appearing in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, Deadpool has been constantly talked about as getting his own movie. A script has been developed, Ryan Reynolds wants to return, and some test footage has even been shot. Whether the project ever actually comes together, we’ll have to wait and see.

In terms of a possible TV show for the X-Men or some of their supporting characters, this is the first real time that the notion has come up. AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. is one Marvel property that’s found a home on TV, although ratings and reviews have been mixed, to say the least. Would an X-Men show do any better? And then there’s the question of what characters would be featured. Would audiences just get some of the smaller, lesser-known characters or would it be a show centred on an X-Men team that features originals like Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Jean Grey and Iceman?

As ever, expect to hear more on both of these projects as and when it develops.
