Much-loved ‘80s anime Robotech is heading for the big-screen courtesy of Warner Bros. The live action adaptation is set to be directed by commercials director Nic Mathieu, who will make the big budget franchise-starter his debut feature. No pressure there then. Former Spider-Man Tobey Maguire remains attached as a producer, and might strap himself into a Mecha once it goes before cameras.

For those not in the know, the original series Robotech ran for 85 episodes between the years 1985 and 1987 (although there has been many spin-offs since), and was a clever amalgam of three existing Japanese animes – The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA – re-edited and re-written by animation company Harmony Gold USA.

The epic, generation-spanning tale told of Earth’s struggle to defend itself against alien invasion – using transforming Mecha suits! Naturally. (Scroll down to the bottom of the page to watch the first ever ep in its entirety. It’s awesome.)

The project has been in development since 2007, but what with the success of three Transformers movies (plus fourth on the way) and the similarly themed Pacific Rim just around the corner, it looks like now is the perfect time to capitalize of cinemagoer’s lust for seeing giant robots get smashed to sh*t.

More as we get it…
