Middle-earth has engulfed Peter Jackson’s world of late, especially upon the announcement that Tolkien’s novel would be adapted across 3 films. However in all this hairy-footed, arrow firing, fire breathing, ruckus, it seems people have forgotten about Peter Jackson’s directorial commitment to the next Tintin film. Tentatively scheduled for a Christmas 2015 release date (which is realistically likely to change), we have heard little else of late about the further onscreen adventures adapted from Belgian author Hergé’s cherished stories about young journalist Tintin, his dog Snowy and the drunken Captain Haddock’s globetrotting exploits. Well, now Jackson has an update certain to raise the fringe of all fans out there!

Steven Spielberg’s 2011 animated film The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn was the result of 20 years of work, waiting and planning, by the likes Spielberg, Jackson, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish. Upon its release the film, though not breaking the box office, performed well enough to push the planned movie series forward. The 2011 film adaptation was, in this author’s opinion, a triumphant adaptation. The film nostalgically embraced Raiders of the Lost Ark-like adventure films and introduced the characters to the modern day cinema audiences. Featuring stellar voicework from talents like Andy Serkis, Jamie Bell and Daniel Craig, which made the characters’ transition from the page to screen a great success. The sequel was planned to be helmed by Peter Jackson and has remained on the cards for a while now but despite apparently having a script set, little has been otherwise revealed.

However in a conversation with BadTaste. It (Via Coming Soon.net), Jackson confirmed that he still fully intends to return to the world of Tintin, alongside the first film’s impressive crew of contributors/Tintin lovers. He states, “As soon as I’m free of The Hobbit, I’ll be going back into doing Tintin,” continuing, “It was held up by The Hobbit, but we have every intention of doing another Tintin movie, and it’s just waiting on me to be done with these Hobbit movies.” Firm details are yet to arrive, on which stories will make up the basis of the sequel but it’s rumoured to be based on the stories, Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun. Producer Kathleen Kennedy recently suggested a potentially exciting possible direction to the story of The Calculus Affair. Whatever the case, it’s a real “great snakes” moment for fans that have probably been pursuing any news of the sequel, as adamantly as the fair-haired reporter would himself. So readers, how’s your thirst for adventure? Unquenchable we hope!
