The executives at Warner Brothers must be heaving a collective sigh of relief as Pacific Rim crushes all in its path at the Chinese box office.

In less than three weeks Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi epic has grossed $104.3 million compared to the $98 million it earned in the U.S. And its momentum shows little sign of slowing down having blocked the hugely popular local comedy Tiny Times sequel, Tiny Times 2, from reaching the number 1 spot.

It’s still too early to tell whether Pacific Rim’s robust Chinese performance will grant the film a sequel, but with China increasingly becoming an important market for the Hollywood studios, surely it would make sense to capitalize on any runaway success?
