Last Autumn, Steven Soderbergh’s CONTAGION made its way around the world and scared audiences with its depiction of what would likely happen if one of the Bird/Pig/Horse flu epidemics we were threatened with over the last ten years actually hit. The film was a tense frightening film and was a moderate box office success despite its dim view of humanity. Now it seems that the studio behind the film; Warner Bros is keen on a sequel.

The sequel is currently an ‘open writing assignment’ at the studio which means that they are keen on hearing pitches from writers and directors. The writer of the first film Scott Z. Burns is attached as a producer but it seems unlikely that Soderbergh will return.

Of all the films that came out last year, this seems like one of the least likely to birth a franchise. Stranger things have happened though, maybe the plot will follow the original virus from CONTAGION as it mutates and affects a different part of the world, who knows?
