Bungie, the game studio that created the massively successful HALO franchise for Microsoft, has officially revealed their next game for Xbox 360 and PS3; DESTINY, an online FPS with elements MMO’s thrown in.

DESTINY will cast players in the defenders of humanity’s last city, in the shadow of a vast, alien spherical “Traveller” who saved what remains of humanity, from some unknown attacker sometime prior to the game. Players will take on missions to regain mankind’s foothold amongst the stars as well as defend the city from attack from what an array of armoured, alien forces

The “ViDoc” trailer debuted on bungie.net and is high on concept, but low on actual gameplay detail. DESTINY seems to blend online multiplayer first person shooter action, both competitive and cooperative, with social elements such as updates to mobile devices for in-game events and areas where players can trade and gamble. In the trailer, the makers of the game seem to be promising an online experience unlike any before, with a persistent online living world, which changes and evolves as players interact with it. DESTINY will not however be a traditional MMO, with no subscription fee planned.

DESTINY has been under heavy scrutiny since it was discovered that this would be their first project with Activision Blizzard after the company split from Microsoft game studios in 2007, with 2010’s HALO:REACH marking the end of Bungie’s involvement in the HALO series.

While Bungie have announced their intention with Activision Blizzard to commit to DESTINY for 10 years the announcement that the game will be released for current gen consoles is somewhat puzzling. Both Microsoft and Sony are expected to make announcements on the next version of their console hardware in the coming weeks and months, with new consoles expected from both companies by the end of 2013/beginning of 2014.

Currently no PC version has been announced.

DESTINY is currently planned for release on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 on 13 December 2013. More information can be found at www.destinythegame.com
