This is not a ghost story. This is not a love story. This is a prayer, a song, a dress, a communion. A betrayal, a sacrifice, a rebirth. At least, so promises the first official trailer for the much-anticipated A24 film, Mother Mary.
Written and directed by David Lowery (The Green Knight, A Ghost Story), the psychosexual pop thriller stars Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel.
In the film, long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary (Hathaway) reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance. Cue spooky seances, simmering sexual tension, and religious symbolism aplenty.
Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs also star. The movie features original songs by Jack Antonoff, Charli xcx, and FKA Twigs.
Lowery has called this project a “weird, weird film” that is partly inspired by Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula. He has also likened it to shooting Apocalypse Now.
Mother Mary is due to release in cinemas in April 2026, with an exact date yet to be announced (so stay tuned). Watch the trailer below:
