Many have been clamouring for another solo Marvel Cinematic Universe outing for the Green Goliath, the Hulk, but that doesn’t seem to be happening any time soon. Sure, there are regular rumblings about some spin on the famed Planet Hulk story, but for now we just have to be content with green ball of rage popping up to help out the Son of Odin in Thor: Ragnarok.

Part of the problem as to why there’s no Hulk solo film on the horizon is down to the issues between Universal and Marvel. Whereas the rest of the MCU movies are distributed by Disney, the rights for the Hulk still remain tied to Universal. Of course, there’s already been one Hulk film in the MCU – 2008’s The Incredible Hulk – and Marvel recently struck a deal with Sony to incorporate Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so there’s still hope. Bruce Banner himself, Mark Ruffalo, has recently chimed in on this whole predicament, though, helping to explain the problems with getting a new Hulk movie off the ground.

Speaking to Yahoo!, Ruffalo said, “Marvel and Universal famously don’t get along very well, and so that’s working against us, definitely. But I know for a fact that everyone is holding out hope that one day we can do it. But the nature of the relationship right now, it’s a little prohibitive. And I hope that changes, that changes with regimes, it changes over the course of time. But right now it doesn’t look particularly promising.”

On whether an agreement could be reached in the same way that Marvel and Sony have come together to bring Spidey to the MCU, Ruffalo added, “Yeah, I think ultimately that’s what they’re after, it working out for both sides. But like I said, Marvel and Universal are just not having a good time together right now.”

When asked where things currently are with Thor: Ragnarok, the actor concluded, “No, they’re still writing the script. That’ll start shooting this summer. In June. There’s still a lot of work to do on that.”

With the Hulk set to remain out of action during the next few Marvel Cinematic Universe entries, the Green Goliath will return to be a part of Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok on November 3rd, 2017.
