It has been confirmed The 75th World Science Fiction Convention will be held in Messukeskus, the Helsinki Exhibition and Convention Centre in Finland in 2017.

Fighting off competition from other places such as Washington DC, Montreal, and Shizuoka in Japan, Helsinki won the prestigious right to host the 2017 Worldcon. Commentators said ‘We profoundly hope that this is the start of a truly international period in Worldcon’s long and established history’.

Worldcon is best known for the event that presents the The Hugo Awards, a set of awards given annually for the best science fiction or fantasy works and achievements of the previous year.

As the selection process is voted for two years ahead of the event, members of this year’s Worldcon, Sasquan, finished voting this Friday. The next potential European Worldcon event is Dublin in 2019.
