Nearly a year after Sony Pictures first announced it would bring Helldivers to the silver screen, news has finally come that long-time The Fast and the Furious franchise director Justin Lin is on board to helm the video game adaptation. Gary Dauberman, best known for penning It and Annabelle, has authored the script for the project.
Lin will also produce the film via his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner, with Hutch Parker and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan co-producing.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Lin aims to “find the humanity in the characters and weave timely themes” into the story for the film adaptation while building out the world and mythology. Helldivers launched in 2015 as a top-down shooter game. The 2024 sequel switched to a third-person perspective.
Heavily inspired by Paul Verhoeven’s classic 1997 action film Starship Troopers, Helldivers and its sequels follow an elite unit of shock troopers in the 22nd century who must battle aliens known simply as Bugs, Cyborgs, and Illuminate, who threaten to destroy the interplanetary empire of Super Earth.
Though best known for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise, Justin Lin also directed Star Trek Beyond, and has worked on television series like Magnum P.I., Scorpion, and Community.
