We’ve known for some time that Rob Zombie’s next project was to be the mysterious 31, but now comes an update on the project. With a 90-day crowdfunding project proving successful, the director is planning to start production on the clown-based horror in February of next year.

Slowly starting to give some more details on the project, Zombie has recently revealed that the inspiration behind 31 was the fact that, statistically, more people go missing on Halloween and are never found than on any other day of the year. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he said, “I thought that’s a good premise for a film. Add in the fact that everyone I know seems to really hate clowns and now you got a film.”

There was some brief speculation at one point that 31 would be a prequel of sorts to Zombie’s HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES, although he’s now revealed that this latest film will be the start of a standalone trilogy of films. Plot-wise, the story will focus on five carnival works who are kidnapped by a group of clowns on the night before Halloween. Dubbed The Heads, the psychopathic clown-outfitted wrong ‘uns hold the five carnies in an ominous-sounding compound known as Murder World. From there, the kidnapped group have 12 hours to survive a horrific game known as 31 in which the clowns aim to hunt them down and slaughter them.
