Following rumblings and sheer speculation, it now looks as if there may – just may – be life in the Alien franchise.
With Disney having now completed their acquisition of Fox and assimilated their key assets, many have wondered what that means for the future of certain Fox properties. Courtesy of the ongoing CinemaCon event, it seems as if there are some sort of plans in place to continue with several famed Fox franchises.
In news coming out of the event, Fox’s Emma Watts revealed that there are plans to develop new movies in the Alien and Planet of the Apes franchises. Similarly, in addition to even more new Avengers: Endgame footage, a Disney sizzle reel featured clips from the Alien, Apes, Predator and Kingsman franchises.
We already know that a Kingsman prequel and sequel are both on the way – not to mention a TV series – and the ending of last year’s The Predator suggested plans for that series to continue. But Alien and Planet of the Apes? Many had presumed those franchises were done, at least for now.
If you remember, Ridley Scott had plans for Alien: Awakening to follow Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Of course, the poor response to and box office performance of Covenant saw all things Alien put indefinitely on hold. Or seemingly not, as now appears to be the case.
It goes without saying that all of this is tentative at this stage and it remains to be seen if, when and how these genre franchises do indeed move forward under Disney’s watch.
