Remember how John Carpenter was returning to the Halloween franchise in a producing capacity? Well, now comes an interesting update on the project from the Master of Horror himself.

Taking to his Facebook page, Carpenter revealed that he’s in a producing partnership with Blumhouse, and that David Gordon Green and Danny McBride will be writing the screenplay. Yes, as in that Danny McBride, he of Kenny F’n Powers fame. Green, who is likely best known for his work on Pineapple Express and Your Highness – both of which starred McBride – will also be directing the return of Michael Myers, which is currently eyed for an October 2018 release.

Carpenter said, “So you say you want a Revolution? You want to shake things up and bring back Halloween and make it rock again? Well so do I. So here’s the announcement you’ve all been waiting for. David Gordon Green and Danny McBride are joining the project to complete the creative team. David and Danny will write the script together and David will direct. I will continue in my executive producer role to consult and offer my advice and feedback as needed. David and Danny both came to my office recently with Jason Blum and shared their version for the new movie and… WOW. They get it. I think you’re gonna dig it. They blew me away. I might even do the music. Maybe. It could be kind of cool.”

David Gordon Green added, “John Carpenter’s Halloween was a monumental horror film experience for me and millions of film fans. It’s an honour to be working with this creative team to carve a new path in the tale of Michael Myers.”

Danny McBride chimed in, “David and I are thrilled to step outside of our comedic collaborations and dive into a dark and vicious horror. Nobody will be laughing.”

Of course, the last outing for The Shape was back in Rob Zombie’s 2009 Halloween II. Before Zombie’s reboot of the franchise, things went sour for Michael when Busta Rhymes pulled out his kung fu moves in 2002’s Halloween: Resurrection.

At this early stage, no plot details are known and it’s unsure just how this new Halloween movie will tie in with the rest of the franchise. It seems unlikely that it will pick things up after Zombie’s Halloween II, so then the other options are a(nother) complete reboot, a continuation from Resurrection, or potentially just carrying on things from 1981’s Halloween II, which Carpenter co-wrote and produced.
