Daniel Bruhl’s mystery CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR role has finally been revealed. And yes, as long speculated, he is indeed playing the villainous Baron Zemo… although it will be the Helmut Zemo version of the character.

After confirming the news to The Independent, Bruhl added, “I think I can tell you that without being thrown into Marvel prison. For the first few days I’ll walk around like a little boy, just amazed by the megalomania of it. It’s such a huge project. We could do 20 films with the budget.”

The character of Baron Zemo initially debuted way back in 1964’s THE AVENGERS #4, with that being Baron Heinrich Zemo. He was a World War II era scientist for Hydra who then formed The Masters of Evil to battle The Avengers. Later on, Heinrich’s son Helmut Zemo would debut in 1973’s CAPTAIN AMERICA #168. Helmut would end up having a nasty accident with a vat of Adhesive X and become mutated before aligning himself with Arnim Zola and Batroc the Leaper, both of whom have appeared in the MCU already. Years down the line, Helmut would actually switch sides and lead The Thunderbolts, a team of reformed villains.

As well as Baron Zemo, CIVIL WAR will also see Frank Grillo’s Brock Rumlow return to the fold, although he’ll now be under the Crossbones moniker. If that wasn’t enough for Cap to deal with, there’s the coming together of both he and Tony Stark, with heroes taking sides as the two battle over a variation of the Superhero Registration Act.

As well as Captain America himself, already confirmed to feature in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR are Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, The Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Winter Soldier and The Vision, along with the MCU debuts of Black Panther and Spider-Man.

To be directed by the Russo brothers, CAPTAIN AMERCA: CIVIL WAR is currently set for a May 6th, 2016 release.
