Nagisa Ôshima’s classic Cruel Story of Youth is to be released on Dual Format Blu-ray/DVD by Eureka! as part of their amazing Masters of Cinema strand.

The film was rejected by the BBFC in 1960 and remained banned until it was passed uncut in 2008.

When high-schooler Makoto is saved from the advances of a lecherous middle-aged man by uni student Kiyoshi, the pair embark on a fits-and-starts affair that finally settles into a sexually extortionary, mutually exploitative dependency that promises to spell their relationship’s doom.

Nagisa Ôshima later became famous for the controversial In the Realm of the Senses and the later Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, and Cruel Story of Youth was only his second film but displayed his potent potential. Eureka! release the new 4K restoration on August 17th. It’s available to pre-order now from the link below.
