DOCTOR WHO Movie Star Daphne Ashbrook’s Autobiography Out Now on Audiobook

Daphne Ashbrook’s autobiography has been released by Fantom as an audiobook on CD, read by the author herself.

From the press release:

Witty, self-effacing and painfully honest; the themes of life, death and laughter come together as Daphne Ashbrook recounts her many on-and off-screen scrapes with mortality. Packed with rich anecdotes from her career in TV, stage and film, this refreshingly candid and conversational memoir spans a childhood in a theatrical family to pulling back the curtain of Hollywood, revealing the glamour and ridiculousness of a business mired in a struggle between art and profit.

Known for both her comic timing and deep emotional portrayals, Daphne has appeared in many TV and film roles including the 1996 Doctor Who movie, in which she played the role of Dr. Grace Holloway and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as the titular character in Melora. Reflecting on her life and her career, Daphne discovers the surprising patterns and hilarious absurdities that accompany being a modern-day professional actor. The result is an amusing, informative and intimate memoir.

Co-produced by Spokenworld Audio, Dead Woman Laughing is available now from the Fantom Films website or to pre-order from Amazon – unabridged – in a 5-CD set priced £15.99.

Michelle Williams Joins Tom Hardy’s VENOM

As the Tom Hardy-headlined Venom movie continues to move forward, the film is on the brink of bringing in an impressive new addition in the form of the Oscar-nommed Michelle Williams.

Courtesy of Variety, the Manchester by the Sea, My Week with Marilyn and, err, Halloween: H20 actress is in advanced talks with Sony Pictures to potentially play a District Attorney who could also be a love interest for Hardy’s Eddie Brock.

Previously, we’d heard reports that the movie was to feature Ann Weying, the ex-wife of Brock and someone who herself briefly became She-Venom, aka the Bride of Venom. Could it that maybe Williams is playing a new spin on Weying? Or could it maybe be that she could play a tweaked take on the comic book Dr Ashley Kafka or A.N. Other female who has ties to Eddie Brock/Venom? We guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

At present, Riz Ahmed is another name signed up to join Tom Hardy, with the rest of the cast to be fleshed-out ASAP given that the picture is booked in for an October 2018 release. Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer is on board to direct what is planned as the first of a new shared Spider-Verse of movies… that will not actually have a Spidey at this stage.

While Tom Holland’s Wall-crawler swings away in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony are working away on Venom and the Silver Sable/Black Cat team-up effort Silver and Black right now. From there, the last we’d heard was that the studio were then looking to give solo films to both Mysterio and Kraven the Hunter as they continue to expand this shared cinematic realm. Current rumblings and speculation suggest that we may – just may – see Holland’s Spider-Man drop by once he’s finished with next year’s Avengers: Infinity War, its 2019 sequel and the follow-up to this year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

As ever, expect more on Venom as it continues to develop.

2019 Release Date Set for New TERMINATOR

With James Cameron currently making plans to bring the gang back together for a sixth Terminator movie, the next entry in the series has been given an official release date.

As per Paramount Pictures, the currently-untitled Terminator effort has been booked in for a July 26th, 2019 release.

What we know about the film so far is that Cameron will oversee things while Deadpool’s Tim Miller directs. Confirmed to return to the franchise are Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton. Now while Das Arnold has been seen as recently as 2015’s Terminator Genisys, fan favourite Hamilton hasn’t been seen in the series since 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

In addition to this, we’re now hearing that this new movie will completely ignore anything post-T2, with Cameron himself stating, “This is a continuation of the story from Terminator 1 and Terminator 2. And we’re pretending the other films were a bad dream.” You and us both, Jim. You and us both.

Of course, the Terminator franchise has famously struggled to put out anything even remotely close to matching the brilliance of those first two movies. In hindsight, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines isn’t actually as bad as we all thought, with the dire Terminator: Salvation making T3 look like a veritable Citizen Kane by comparison. Then there’s Genisys, a follow-up that was nowhere near as bad as some of us were fearing, yet was still a major let down – not least for how it gave away it’s big reveal (John Connor’s really a Terminator, kids!) in all of its trailers!

With the rights to the Terminator franchise soon to return to Cameron, the current plan is for this next film to be the launching point for a new trilogy of pictures which will bring back plenty of familiar faces while also introducing some new blood to the franchise.

As ever, expect more on all things Terminator as we get it.

SCANNERS TV Series in Development

In a landscape where so many genre favourite movies are being adapted as small screen series, you can now add David Cronenberg’s Scanners to the list.

As per Deadline, Michael Ellenberg’s Media Res and Bron Studios have picked up the rights to Cronenberg’s iconic 1981 movie, with the plan being to “develop and package the TV series adaptation with a high-end filmmaker and showrunner before shopping it to premium services”.

If you remember back, there were actually plans to adapt Scanners as a TV show back in 2011. At that time, Switchblade Romance’s Alexandre Aja was on board to direct the series. After all went eerily quiet on that relaunch, it looked as if all plans were off. Until now, that is!

No further details are known at this stage, although this is just the latest in a long line of genre favourites being adapted for a TV audience, with the likes of Hannibal, Bates Motel, Damien (which was truly awful!) and The Exorcist all instantly coming to mind when thinking of famed properties recently adapted.

Cronenberg’s original movie starred the likes of Jennifer O’Neill, Stephan Lack and Patrick McGoohan, and proved a huge hit with genre fans thanks to its rich, dark sci-fi tones and its ground-breaking SFX work. The loose plot focussed on a chap with impressive psychic abilities who was on the hunt to find those with similar powers. Scanners spawned two outright sequels in 1991’s Scanners II: The New Order and 1992’s Scanners III: The Takeover, while two spinoffs – Scanner Cop and Scanners: The Showdown – were also developed.

Expect more on this Scanners show as we get it.

THE MIST Cancelled After Just One Season

In some news that, let’s face it, won’t come as any real surprise, Spike have moved to cancel The Mist after just one season.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the series has been canned with dwindling ratings being cited as the primary reason. Despite grabbing 1.2 million viewers for its US premiere, the show quickly struggled to push past the 800,000 mark for subsequent episodes and soon struggled to even crack the top thirty scripted shows on US television when it came to viewing figures.

Here in the UK, The Mist found its home on Netflix. Despite many genre fans wanting the show to succeed, it soon became apparent that, well, that it just really wasn’t all that good.

In case you missed it, the synopsis for the series reads as follows:

Based on a story by Stephen King, The Mist centres around a small town family that is torn apart by a brutal crime. As they deal with the fallout, an eerie mist rolls in, suddenly cutting them off form the rest of the world and, in some cases, each other. Family, friends and adversaries become strange bedfellows, battling the mysterious mist and its threats, fighting to maintain morality and sanity as the rules of society break down.

Sadly, The Mist failed to live up to its promise, with the Thomas Jane-headlined 2007 movie adaptation of King’s novel proving a far better take on the story.

Space Junk – Kickstarter Now Live

Having released their pilot episode online, the creators of web series Space Junk are now seeking funding to help them make the next five episodes.

Following the crew of the Really Invincible III, Macclesfield Division, this lo-fi sci-fi explores what life would really be like out in the darkness of space, featuring well-known British TV actor Mark Benton alongside Coronation Street star Katy Cavanagh.

When we interviewed the cast on set earlier this year, writer/actor Neil Warhurst described Space Junk’s style of comedy: “These ordinary people – ordinary, bored, failed, pretty tragic people – their overall mission is quite epic, they want to discover new life, but they’ve been there for six years and they’ve not discovered any. So on the side, they’ve been asked to do some cleaning up.”

The writers also teased some future storylines, including a scuttling noise in the hold turning out to be a crewmember’s ex, a seemingly lifeless planet with a dangerous disease in its dust, and the ship’s resident clone carrying out some rather disturbing experiments.

It’s these episodes that producer Chris Jupe and his team now want to fund, and they’re asking for your help to raise £23,500.

There are a range of great perks on offer, and you can donate now, plus watch the pilot, via Kickstarter.

2018 Date Set for Eli Roth’s THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS

Following this week’s news that Kyle MacLachlan has joined Eli Roth’s The House With a Clock in its Walls, that film has now been given a release date and also brought in another new cast member.

As per Deadline, not only is the adaptation of John Bellairs and Edward Gorey’s 1973 book set for September 21st, 2018, but the movie has added Apocalypse Now and Knock Knock’s Colleen Camp to its ranks. Camp joins the aforementioned MacLachlan as well as Jack Black and Cate Blanchett.

Roth is on directing duties here, with Eric Kripke penning the screenplay based on the original novel. The basic premise centres on a 10-year-old orphan who finds a whole world of hidden passageways, magic and, of course, danger in his uncle’s house.

TREMORS TV Series Adds Toks Olagundoye

With the long-gestating Tremors TV series finally coming together, the show has added Toks Olagundoye to its ranks.

As per Deadline, the Castle actress has joined the show in a ‘series regular’ capacity. In the series, Olagundoye will play Jessica Florence, described as “an accomplished, city-chic civil engineer. Jessica’s arrival in Perfection instantly piques the curiosity of Val. But Jessica’s in town for work, not play: she’s been contracted by the enterprising Melvin to expand the access road.”

Back as Val, of course, is Kevin Bacon, who has played a pivotal role in getting the series off the ground. As well as Bacon and Olagundoye, the Tremors show has Vinyl’s Emily Tremaine, American Gothic’s Megan Ketch and Evil Dead’s Shiloh Fernandez on board at this stage.

The early word on the series reads:

In the Tremors follow-up, written by Andrew Miller and to be directed by Cube and Splice’s Vincenzo Natali, the killer Gaboid worms that nearly destroyed Perfection, NV, 25 years ago are back, and the town’s only hope for survival is Valentine McKee, who beat them once. But to do it again he’ll have to overcome age, alcohol and a delusional hero complex.

As ever, expect more on Tremors as it continues to develop.

Release Date Set for IT Sequel

While it would’ve taken a flop of monumental proportions to stop the follow-up to Andy Muschietti’s IT from happening, said sequel has now been given an official release date.

Seemingly titled simply IT: Part 2 at this stage, the second part of Muschietti’s Stephen King adaptation will hit the silver screen on September 6th, 2019. Much like Muschietti will be back to direct, IT’s Gary Dauberman will be back to pen the screenplay.

For those unfamiliar with King’s source material or the 1990 two-part TV effort, the second part of IT will focus on the Losers Club as adults in the present day. Heading back to Derry, the group have to come together again to vanquish the threat of Pennywise once and for all.

At this stage, the adult Losers Club have yet to be cast, but expect a whole lot more on IT as we get it.
