If you’re a fan of MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES and were eagerly awaiting its sequel, MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF ASHES, then be prepared to be disappointed.

After a lacklustre performance at the global box office, Constantin Films and Sony Pictures Entertainment has delayed the production of the next instalment. It’s hardly a secret that Sony were hoping to cash-in on the post TWILIGHT audience with the adaptation of this Young Adult fantasy series. However that audience seems to have moved on, leaving the chances of a sequel in doubt.

Principal photography was expected to start later this year and Constantin said in a statement that the reason for the delay is to “analyse the results to date and reposition the franchise in order to maximize the results for future instalments.” Direct to DVD perhaps?

Since its opening on in August the $60 million dollar adaptation of the Cassandra Clare novel has grossed more than $70 million worldwide but only $28 million in the States.
