The upcoming sequel to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla has moved to bring another familiar genre face into its ranks.

As announced by Legendary Pictures, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’s Zhang Ziyi has landed a role in Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The early details on Ziyi’s character is that it is a significant figure within the Monarch organisation that was seen in the first movie. It’s being reported this is a ‘franchise role’, meaning that Ziyi will be back for any follow-up movies. Already announced, of course, is the huge crossover Godzilla vs. Kong movie for May 2020, so it seems likely that Ziyi will be a part of that Adam Wingard-helmed picture.

As for King of the Monsters, Ziyi joins a cast that currently features the likes of Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Bradley Whitford, Vera Farmiga, and the returning dup of Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe. Set several years after the 2014 movie, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is currently set for a March 22nd, 2019 release.
