Zazie Beetz is in talks to reprise her role as Sophie Dumond in Todd Phillips’ upcoming sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, according to a Deadline exclusive.

The Warner Bros and DC film is set to start filming in December, ahead of a 2024 release date. Lady Gaga last week announced she was joining the movie’s cast in what many expect to be the role of Harley Quinn/Dr. Harleen Quinzel, the Arkham Asylum psychiatrist who becomes Joker’s partner in crime.

Joker 2 is said to be a musical, though this has yet to be confirmed by Phillips – in any case, Beetz looks good to go on that front, having previously shown off her singing talents as Stagecoach Mary in Jeymes Samuel’s The Harder They Fall.

In Joker, Beetz’s Sophie was Arthur Fleck/Joker’s (Joaquin Phoenix) neighbour, a single mum struggling to make ends meet in an increasingly dangerous Gotham City. Arthur also had delusions of being in a romantic relationship with Sophie.

Zazie Beetz was most recently seen in the Brad Pitt-starring comedy-action romp Bullet Train, and will next appear in a new episode of Black Mirror, the actress recently confirmed.

Joker: Folie à Deux is set for theatrical release on October 4th, 2024.
