In news that’s unlikely to much bother anyone, the DC-based feature Wonder Twins has been deactivated. Production was scheduled to begin this July, but the HBO Max live-action film has now been shelved.

Wonder Twins was due to star Riverdale’s KJ Apa and 1883 actress Isabel May as the titular siblings, with Adam Sztykiel (the upcoming Black Adam) directing from his own script. Wonder Twins classically follows a pair of alien siblings named Zan and Jayna who hail from the planet Exxor, and have a pet space monkey named Gleek.

First seen in Hanna-Barbera’s 1977 animated series All-New Super Friends Hour, twin Jayna has the ability to shape-shift into animal form, while Zan can shape-shift into any state of water. The super-siblings’ powers are activated by bumping knuckles and declaring: “Wonder Twin power, activate!”.

The twins also appeared in DC comics and were later folded into the main universe, since appearing on episodes of Smallville (portrayed by David Gallagher and Allison Scagliotti), Teen Titans Go! (voiced by  Khary Payton and Tara Strong), and others. Their pet monkey Gleek also appears in the Arrowverse crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Sources have explained that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is mandating that DC movies be made with a theatrical release-first goal, and as such Wonder Twins was too niche.
