Fans have just received their first (proper) look at Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Black Adam, courtesy of DC FanDome.

The former WWE star-turned-actor has long been attached to play the famous anti-hero, and production on the film finally wrapped in July, earlier this year. Though the character was supposed to debut in David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! – whose sequel also features in the DC event – Warner Bros. opted instead to debut him in his very own, standalone film. Johnson’s character was still briefly mentioned by the wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou) who, when talking to the young Billy Batson (Asher Angel), explains that he once chose a champion who ended up unleashing the Seven Deadly Sins on Earth and erased entire civilisations as a result. That champion was Black Adam.

Depicted over the years as both a straight-up supervillain and an antihero, Black Adam is one of the very few characters who can go toe-to-toe with DC’s unofficial main man, Superman. Despite having gone up against the Man of Steel and a number of other DC superheroes though, Black Adam is best known as a Shazam villain.

As well as the titular hero, Black Adam will serve to introduce the Justice Society of America, including its members Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan, who promises this film is bigger than even James Bond), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo).

This latest introduction into the DCEU comes from The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra, and is set to release in July 2022. Watch below for one of the opening scenes of Black Adam, which doubles as the character’s very first appearance (and a good showcase of some of his powers):
