One of the driving forces behind Marvel Comics is the sense of mystery; some, like Wolverine’s origin, are eventually (and somewhat disappointingly) explained, though others remain. One of the most popular and emblematic characters of Marvel’s funny books is Venom. While the parasitic life-form’s backstory remains largely unexplored, that’s all about to change, and in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, of all places.

James Gunn’s impressive film adaptation has done plenty to generate interest in perhaps Marvel’s least known long running series. The story, told across three issues and titled PLANET OF THE SYMBIOTES, is written by Brian Micheal Bendis and an artist fresh to the title, Valerio Schiti.

The Venom backstory is likely to prove the credence of comics, as it’s a story that isn’t likely to hit the silver screen any time soon, despite a GUARDIANS sequel and a Venom (sort of) solo movie announced. Copyright issues have crippled the possibility of a truly panoramic view of the Marvel universe, but fans of Spidey may very well find themselves picking up the upcoming trio of GUARDIANS comics.

Planet of the Symbiotes is likely to go down a storm, but is explaining Venom’s background really a good idea?
