With Suicide Squad the latest offering in Warner Brothers’ DCEU, there’s a whole host of films still ahead for the studio’s big screen DC characters. Whilst Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, the Green Lantern Corps., and even Cyborg have their own movies on the horizon, all has been a little quiet on the Shazam! front. Fear not, though, for that film has been confirmed to still be on track.

All has been mighty quiet on the Shazam! front ever since Dwayne Johnson was finally announced to be playing Black Adam in the film, but Dany Garcia has now given an update on where things are with the picture.

The producing partner, manager and ex-wife of Johnson, Garcia told Newsweek, “Shazam! is to live in the same world but we have incredible autonomy over this brand and franchise. We are working with a different team, different producers, directors… it’s a different set-up. We don’t feel fettered by, or constrained by, the successes or failures and challenges of the other projects. That was a key component to our participation – that we be able to control the tone and the voice, and do it the way we want to.”

She then added, “We’re getting drafts in. It’s important to make sure we get the tone right for Black Adam, which is Dwayne’s part. We don’t mind taking our time. We’re being very careful with each act and scene to go back and layer in as much as possible.”

At present, Jack the Giant Slayer’s Darren Lemke is working on the script for Shazam!, and the last word on a release date saw the film slated for an April 5, 2019 release. Johnson himself, though, has suggested that the film may well arrive before that date.

Whilst Johnson will be playing the villainous Black Adam, the main focus of the film will be the titular hero of Shazam. Teenager Billy Batson magically transforms into the hero, who is one of the most powerful in the DC world, by shouting the word “Shazam!”.

As ever, expect more on Shazam! as it develops.
